The Opportunity We are currently seeking a Chief Mine Geologist to join our Mines Technical Services team based in St. John's, NL. This is a permanent position, working a Monday to Friday schedule in the St. John's office. Regular travel to the Voisey's Bay mine site is required. As a Chief Mine Geologist (CMG), you will be accountable for geological functions supporting Mining Operations. You will oversee the Definition Drilling Program and work closely with engineering to support the mine designs for the Life of Mine Plan. In addition, the CMG will mentor and train geologists in all aspects of resource estimation.The position will require preparation of technical reports, evaluation of geological block models for underground mining and presentations for senior and interdisciplinary review. - Ensure work performed by the VB geology team is safe and satisfies the strategy of the Operation.
- Oversee mineral resource block model interpolations in compliance with company and legislated resource and reserve reporting standards, including NI 43-101, CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves, and MTS guidelines. The CMG will act as a QP (Qualified Person) during compilation of mentioned technical reports.
- Liaise with Exploration team to build drilling strategies for resource deliniation and conversion. Build associated budgets for annual submission.
- Be accountable for designs and manage definition drilling programs to be carried out as underground advance progresses.
- Support Scoping, Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility studies for various ore bodies & projects in Voisey's Bay Operations and occasionally across North Atlantic. Supervise Geologists and Geological Technicians in support of operational requirements.
- Ensures the accuracy of underground block models including rhe evaluation of mining grades and recoveries for underground stoping.
- Integrate with various Mining Groups to ensure targets; goals; schedules; work; all covered and within the overall schedule.
- Assist with the development of annual LoMP/ MRMR /various scopes within the planning process.
- B.Sc. Honours (preferred); or B.Sc. (in Geology or Earth Sciences).
- Professional Geoscientist (P. Geo.) license is required.
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, including at least 5 years' experience in an underground mining environment.
- Ability to lead technical teams.
- Ability to analyze problems systematically and develop solutions.
- Willingness to learn, comply with and apply Vale SH&E policies and procedures.
- Basic understanding of the relevant geoscience disipline.
- Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of underground Drilling methods and experience working in and underground mining environment.
