The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Analytical Laboratory Co-op Student to join our Vale Operations in Port Colborne, Ontario.

This is a 12 month-fixed term, co-op position starting in January 2025.

As an Analytical Laboratory Co-op Student, you will provide support to the Operating units at the Port Colborne Refinery. The Lab Technician is required to be multi-skilled and able to carry out a wide variety of routine analytical techniques. In this role, upon completion of training, you will rotate through various roles, conducting daily analysis for the operation. The laboratory operates 24 hours a day, 5 days per week. Ability to troubleshoot analytical instrumentation will be viewed as an asset.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Perform filtration and aliquot for liquid analysis. Perform measurement using a balance for solid analysis
  • Set up and calibrate existing analytical instrumentation ICP-OES, ICP-MS, LECO, Combustion/Fusion analysis
  • Operate computer programs for the calibration of analytical equipment and generation of diagnostic results
  • Monitor results to assure quality and identify suspect data; applying problem solving skills, potentially re-assaying to correct
  • Perform maintenance involving calibration, cleaning parts, and troubleshooting problems to ensure that the instruments stay in full working order

About You

Education:

  • Currently enrolled as a Chemistry, Chemical Technology or Chemical Engineering student in a Co-op Program
  • Solid verbal, written and analytical communication skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Proven time management and organization skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and a proven safety record are essential
