Child and Youth Care Practitioners (CYCPs) are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 5047 (CUPE). The CUPE collective agreement can be accessed by clicking HERE

Due to the nature of the position a car is required as travel will include all schools within HRCE (mileage is reimbursed).

The Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP) is responsible for collaborating with school teams to help implement proactive supports for children and youth with coping in school settings due to social, emotional and/or behavior issues. The Child and Youth Care Practitioner will provide services and supports to students with the goal of improving student success and supporting effective connections and communication between the home, school and community settings. Consistent with policies of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, the Child and Youth Care Practitioner will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework for the delivery of specialized services to families. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, families, SchoolsPlus and community agencies, the Child and Youth Care Practitioner reports directly to the Lead, SchoolsPlus or designate.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma or certificate such as Nova Scotia Community College: Child & Youth Care Practitioner Program diploma;
  • Minimum of two (2) years of successful experience working in an educational setting;
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle; d) Current First Aid and CPR certification;
  • Valid NVCI training (or willingness to be trained in non-violent crisis intervention and ability to apply techniques);
  • Membership in the NS Child and Youth Care Workers' Association is an asset.
  • Rate of Pay:

    This is a 12-month per year CUPE position with a starting annual salary of $42,589.51 paid every two weeks. Salary is based on a six (6) step scale with step increases occurring annually in accordance with the Collective Agreement as shown below.

    The annual salary for term positions less than a year is pro-rated over the length of the term.

    Hours of Work:

    Seven (7) hours per day (excluding lunch) totalling 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

    Vacation:

    Permanent CYCPs initially receive three (3) weeks vacation per year (15 days) for the quota period September 1 st to August 31 st . CYCPs employed less than one year receive 10 vacation days for the first year pro-rated based on start date. Term CYCPs receive 4% vacation pay on each pay.
