With over 140 non-bargaining staff and lawyers operating out of 18 offices, Legal Aid NL is one of the largest providers of legal services in the province, offering services to eligible individuals in the areas of family, criminal and some administrative law matters. Our vision is to ensure all people, regardless of means, capacity or social situation, have access to the knowledge and services they require to protect their basic legal rights.

We are searching for an experienced Payroll & Benefits Officer (contractual until January 31, 2026) to fill a vacancy in the Provincial Director's Office based in St. John's, NL. Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the successful applicant will be responsible for the effective management and administration of Legal Aid's payroll and benefits programs across the province.

Key job specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing support to the Human Resources department by:
  • Preparing and reviewing bi-weekly payroll including salary changes and retroactive payments
  • Preparing and producing off cycle payments and adjustment as needed
  • Calculating and preparing statutory deductions and other remittances
  • Preparing payroll reconciliations, T4's, ROE's, Workplace NL reports, pension adjustments
  • Reviewing audit reports to ensure accuracy of data
  • Preparing reports related to employee leave, sick leave etc.
  • Ensuring all employee information related to payroll and benefits is accurate and communicating changes to service providers
  • Preparing documentation related to new hires, terminations/retirements
  • Organizing and maintaining documentation related to the payroll and benefits function
  • Answering payroll, benefits, and pension questions from employees and acting as liaison with benefits and pension providers where required
  • Managing all incoming/outgoing correspondence related to payroll, benefits, and pensions
  • Assisting with knowledge sharing, mentoring and training of co-workers and new employees as requested and any other responsibilities which may be assigned

Screening Criteria:

  • completion of two-year Business Diploma Program
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in payroll, benefits, and leave management.
  • Knowledge and experience administrating the Public Service Pension Plan through Provident10 and the Provincial Government Benefits Plan
  • Holding active membership/certification with the Canadian Payroll Association would be an asset
  • Experience with Sage 300 and employee self-serve systems is an asset

Assessment Criteria:

Knowledge of payroll systems and processes, benefits, and pensions

Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality

Ability to manage time and tasks by organizing work, setting priorities and meeting deadlines

Excellent attention to detail and accuracy

Frontline customer service skills and relationship building

Experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point

The successful candidate will be required to provide a Certificate of Conduct with Vulnerable Sector Check prior to commencing employment.

Legal Aid NL offers an attractive compensation package that includes a competitive salary based on the CG-30 pay scale and ranges from $50,596.00 - $56,201.60 per annum, comprehensive health benefits (optional dental and long-term disability available), and participation in the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's pension plan. We also offer a generous leave program and opportunities for hybrid work.
