Position Scope:

Under the direction of the Director of Resident Care, and in collaboration with the Senior Management Team the Professional Practice/Infection Control Coordinator is responsible for delivering education to front line staff. The focus will be mainly on infection control practices but could include other topics including audits.

Organizational Relationships:

Maintains a positive working relationship within the Management Team at Mountain Lea Lodge. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with the circle of care delivering education which is based on evidence and best practice.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Develop monthly education calendar and track participants in an education data base that is divided by discipline

Teach courses and provide training to both licensed and unlicensed staff

Report monthly to the Director of Resident care and CEO on educational activities

Educate and audit staff on infection control best practices and other identified priority areas

Support the Leadership Team at MLL during an outbreak situation

· Oversee the vaccination program at Mountain Lea Lodge.

Staff Support:

Assist Director of Resident Care in providing educational opportunities to staff and help develop staff educational plans (Recognized Prior Learning)

Participates in meetings and educational opportunities

Helps in Policy Development as requested and provides education to staff

Judgement and Initiative:

· Must demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills and judgement with participants, staff, families, and other stakeholders.

· Must be flexible in dealing with changing or challenging situations, supports the needs of participants, presenting an attitude of respect, empathy and understanding.

· Must be a positive role model, encouraging good morale, demonstrating respect, and providing advocacy as needed.

· This is a position of trust in which most work is performed under indirect supervision.

· Personal integrity, initiative and good judgement are required.

· The ability to cooperate with other staff and work harmoniously as a member of a team is essential.

Working Environment:

· Much of the work is on site at Mountain Lea Lodge. Some travel is included such as attendance to education and meetings.

Hazards:

· While working with residents one may be exposed to behaviours such as physical and verbal abuse. Cuts, scrapes, chemical burns, cigarette smoke, or injuries, may result from routine tasks. Pets and plants are part of the normal working environment.

Qualifications:

Currently registered with the College of Nurses of Nova Scotia

Minimum of three years of progressive nursing experience and education in which leadership, administrative and interpersonal skills have been demonstrated.

Past Long Term Care experience is an asset

Must have excellent communication skills both verbal and written

Must have excellent conflict management skills

May require flexibility with work hours at times

Current certification in CPR and Standard First Aid

Policy development required

Skills and Abilities:

Proven leadership and team building skills

Ability to work independently

Ability to develop, implement and evaluate resident-centred programs

Proven organizational and time management skills

Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment

Demonstrated computer skills, preferably in MS Office Suite

Maintain regular attendance

· A sound knowledge of and be able to practice the principles of diversity and inclusion. Empathy with clients, warmth, patience, imagination, teaching ability, creativity, and a positive approach toward community integration, are all important requirements.

· Must be willing to attend in service education, seminars, workshops, other educational events, and participate in team meetings
