Formac Lorimer Books is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced promotion and marketing project specialist to join our independent book publishing and marketing operation in Halifax.

The selected candidate will develop and implement innovative projects to promote and sell our books and our digital platform projects. Working with our sales team, email marketing specialist, editorial team and authors the candidate will target book buyers in the Maritimes and across Canada. Many of our projects aim at schools, university professors and librarians, so experience in K-12 education and familiarity with provincial curricula and classroom needs is valued, as is knowledge of the post-secondary sector.

We promote and market the books published by James Lorimer & Co (Toronto) and Formac Publishing (Halifax). These companies publish in both traditional and digital formats (see www.formaclorimerbooks.ca). We also have innovative digital collections of books which are used by public library users (www.eastcoastrecipes.ca) and by teachers and students (www.canadiancloudlibrary.ca). Our projects include marketing a digital collection of illustrated books for grades 7-12 on historic Canadian wrongs, a digital collection of magazines on Canadian history for grades 4-8, a series of teen romance novels featuring LGBTQ2S+ relationships, a digital collection of ebooks for leisure reading for school students, and a set of kids' books on space and stargazing. We will be marketing French-language versions of some of these books in the coming months.

We promote new titles to the traditional media, including newspapers, radio, and TV. We deal with local and regional media across Canada, as well as the major national media.

This position offers an opportunity to practice a wide range of promotion and marketing skills. The successful candidate for this role will come to the position with significant previous promotion and marketing experience, and the capacity to take responsibility for planning and executing marketing projects with defined targets and significant budgets.

Qualifications for this role include:

An undergraduate degree in social sciences, the humanities or education is required, and post-graduate work in marketing, promotion, or publicity is desirable

  • Experience in K-12 education and familiarity with provincial curricula and/or childrens/YA librarianship qualifications and experience
  • Experience in promotion and marketing to the university market in Canada Strong regional and national current affairs media awareness, including familiarity with CBC Radio, Globe and Mail, Halifax Chronicle Herald, and major national and regional digital news sites
  • Substantial experience in digital marketing including email and social media
  • Experience in developing marketing project plans and executing them successfully
  • Experience in promotion and publicity addressing the traditional media regionally and/or nationally
  • Minimum five years' experience in relevant promotion and marketing work

Skills required for the role:

  • High competence in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
  • Strong informational and promotional copywriting skills addressing both professional and consumer audiences
  • Website copywriting creation
  • Experienced user of Google Analytics to evaluate website traffic
  • Strong inter-personal communication skills
  • French language skills

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Developing projects implementing strategies to market sets and collections of our books to specific target market
  • Successfully implementing marketing projects on time and within budgets, achieving sales and other targets
  • Maintaining relationships with professional users of our digital platforms, and initiating continuous improvements in their features and function
  • Using a wide range of analytics to monitor use of our digital resources and adjusting our ongoing activities based on measured results and impacts
  • Identifying new opportunities for marketing our titles to new users and customers
  • Promoting our new titles to relevant local, regional and national media

This is a full-time position located in the south end of Halifax. Hours of work are 9-5 Monday to Friday. The salary range for this position is 50K-55K, commensurate with qualifications and experience. We offer an extensive company benefits plan.
