Our staff provides support for clients at the Adult Day Program sites in the Hastings, Northumberland and Prince Edward Counties within the framework of VON philosophy, policies, procedures and standards in community health care. The Respite worker will provide care according to the needs of the individual in accordance with care plans developed with the family and Recreation Therapist.
The Adult Day program provides a break for primary caregivers of people who need continuous care or monitoring. These primary caregivers usually are family members, who can be stressed and exhausted from trying to deal with work, home responsibilities and their loved one. The staff at the Adult Day program are able to provide caregivers with some time away from their constant duties.
Responsibilities:
- Provides care to the clients during the scheduled day at the Adult Day program
- Uses knowledge of current best practices in dementia care as a basis for all client interactions
- Plan & prepare nutritious snacks and meals, including special diets if required
- Facilitates social and recreational programs/activities to activate, stimulate, motivate and work toward supporting a person's health and well-being
- Assist with Activities of Daily Living as required (toileting, personal hygiene). Collaborates with Recreation Therapist to identify risk factors and introduce interventions to minimize and eliminate client incidents
- Assist with medications if poured and labeled by caregiver
- Ensures the safety and security of the client by providing supervision at all times
- Observes and reports changes in clients behavior, mood or appearance to the Recreation Therapist
- Contributes to the continuous evaluation of the plan of care to determine the extent to which the needs of the client and the caregiver have been met
- Responsible for monitoring email daily and voicemail 3x daily
- Completes records and reports of activities for administrative purposes as required, ie: daily charting, timesheets, Event Reports
- Reports verbally to the Recreation Therapist any changes in client needs or home situation requiring a change in the plan of care
- Participates as a constructive member of the work team through collaboration, mentoring and participation in team meetings
- Attends and/or completes inservice education sessions as appropriate
- Dresses in accordance with the dress code policy of the VON
- Site Specific: The program may include a Transportation Enhancement Plan that allows staff to take clients on outings in the staff's vehicle with Respite Services Supervisor or Manager approval.
- Previous experience working with individuals with Alzheimer's Disease and related Dementia
- PSW Certification
- Gentle Persuasive Approaches, U-First or PIECES training desirable
- Computer literacy and ability to perform basic technical tasks including email, internet navigation, enter data into spreadsheet, save documents and send attachments is essential
- Demonstrated skill in observation, adjusting to different work situations /problem solving and working independently
- Ability to speak French is an asset in French Designated areas
- Possession of a valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle and proof of car insurance as transportation of clients will be required
- Current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required upon the start of your employment
- A current Vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required
