Position: Director of Natural Resources Management

Location: Bilijk (Kingsclear First Nation)

Reports to: Director of Operations

Term: Full Time Permanent

Purpose:

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Natural Resources Management (DNRM) to lead and shape our strategic vision for natural resource management. This position will be responsible for the coordination of Fisheries, Forestry, & all other natural resource management operations. The role will ensure that all those operating under the DNRM direction are primarily focused on the mission and goals of Bilijk. The incumbent will also provide exceptional leadership and guidance to ensure the quality of the Natural Resources programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Leading and influencing the development and implementation of Natural Resources management strategies

· Liaison with government representatives on all matters related to Natural Resources

· Advocate for First Nations Natural Resources rights in the province

· Oversees the general operations of the Natural Resources Department that includes mentoring, directing, and supporting staff

· Works collaboratively with local communities, and policymakers to ensure the health and vitality of our aquatic ecosystems

· Engage and collaborate with Indigenous organizations, including but not limited to, Maliseet Nation Conservation Council (MNCC), WNNB/WTCI, MTI, and APC

· Committed to ensuring that energy projects and mining operations within our territory are conducted responsibly, with a focus on environmental protection, community engagement, and economic benefits

· Lead forestry initiatives that are designed to balance ecological integrity with economic viability, ensuring the health and resilience of our forests for future generations

· Oversee the management of the commercial fisheries program, with a focus maximizing economic benefits.

· Engage in the diversification of the commercial fisheries program, while actively collaborating with agencies such as Ulnooweg

· Overseeing project and program budgets, meeting deliverables and reporting requirements, and seeking new funding for Natural Resources interests

· Develop and maintain positive working relationships, respond to consultation requests, encouraging effective working relationships, & maintain a network of professional contacts

Qualifications/Requirements:

· Degree or diploma in one or more of the following: natural or renewable resource management, fishery management, environmental studies OR minimum five (5) years relevant work experience

· Experience in a management/leadership position

· Knowledge of Natural Resources issues and legislation affecting First Nations both locally and nationally

· Commitment to environmental and community stewardship

· Ability to plan, organize, direct and control daily operations

· Knowledge and experience working within First Nations communities

· Ability to research, analyze and develop strategic goals, work plans, and policies and procedures

· Extensive knowledge of Wolastoqey culture and language

· Ability to problem solve & manage projects

· Ability to assume responsibility and meet deadlines

· Ability to supervise and mentor staff

· Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with coworkers, community, and with outside partners and business associates

· Advanced computer application skills, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office.
