The Mechanic is required to perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of municipal vehicles and, heavy trucks and construction equipment including but not limited to loaders, gasoline and diesel-powered tractors, snow removal equipment, street sweeper, Fire department fleet, lawn care equipment fleet, Ice rink resurfacing machine, and all other town owned public works and recreation department equipment. The employee must be able to analyze, troubleshoot, dismantle, align, assemble, and adjust municipal vehicles, mechanical equipment, and machinery to maintain it in efficient and safe operating conditions. Work assignments will be received in the form of oral or written work orders, but the employee is also expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs. This position will also have responsibility of monitoring and scheduling workflow in the garage and repair shop.

Tasks

  • Inspect, repair, and adjust gasoline and diesel-powered units.
  • Provide vehicle troubleshooting and diagnostic repairs.
  • Perform welding operations on equipment.
  • Communicate unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the Superintendent to facilitate prompt correction and reporting.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality service.
  • Diagnose defects in machinery, vehicles, heavy equipment, and other related equipment.
  • Perform mechanical repairs on municipal vehicles, equipment in the shop and road calls when required.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs to all Public Works vehicles and equipment to ensure that they are available, reliable, and safe for operation.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs of all lawn care equipment fleet, Ice Rink resurfacing machine and all other recreation department vehicles and equipment as required to ensure they are available, reliable, and safe for operation.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs to all Fire Department Fleet vehicles and equipment to ensure that they are available, reliable, and safe for operation.
  • Installation of new and add-on equipment.
  • Electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting diagnostics.
  • Accurate completion of work.
  • Repair cooling and lubrication systems, install, and align engines and machinery, repair mechanical transmissions, drivetrains, and final drive.
  • Oversee the proper function of the garage, including fueling area, wash area, mechanic area, and equipment storage area.
  • Test repaired municipal vehicles and equipment for proper performance.
  • Repair cable-operated working attachments, winches, compressors, pumps, and electric generators.
  • Clean and lubricate municipal vehicles and equipment and perform other related maintenance work.
  • Keep detailed and accurate maintenance reports and documentation.
  • Assist the Lead Mechanic with the requisition of supplies, parts and equipment as needed.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and repair techniques.
  • Perform other mechanical and maintenance duties as required.
  • Responsible for inventory and requisition of replacement equipment, parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Perform safety inspection in accordance with provincial legislation on all vehicles within the municipal fleet.

Discretion - Scope for initiative and Judgement: Perform tasks without direct supervision and must be able to exercise initiative and independent judgment.

Working Conditions

  • Manual handling of objects up to 25kg.
  • May, from time to time, be willing and able to work outside normal hours, including overtime.
  • Work with hazardous substances, equipment, and materials.
  • Require working in a variety of environments (office, garage, outdoors in seasons/conditions).
  • Work environments may tend to be busy, noisy and the incumbent will need to have excellent organizational and stress management skills to complete the required task.

Position requirements

Education:

  • Successful completion of Truck and Transport Service Technician program or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of Automotive Service Technician or equivalent.
  • Must have a high school diploma.

Experience: Minimum five (5) years practical industry-specific experience as a Truck and Transport Service Technician.

Additional qualifications and skills:

  • Must be able to read and write in both English and French.
  • Proven mechanical abilities in gas and diesel automotive repairs.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven mechanical abilities in hydraulics and electrical, including schematics and diagnostics.
  • Knowledge in the operation of mechanical equipment and vehicles.
  • Must be able to understand, interpret and carry out oral or written assignments.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Basic computer literacy in Microsoft Office.
  • Workplace First Aid and CPR/AED certified.
  • Must possess a valid New Brunswick Class 5 or greater driver's license.
  • Valid trade-specific licenses are required.
  • Ability to understand and follow safe work policies as outlined by the Town of Shediac and the province of New Brunswick.
  • Possess own set of tools.
