About Atlantic Cultivation & Atlantic Cannabis (ACL)

Atlantic Cultivation is a fully integrated cannabis producer located in the heart of St. John's, NL. We cultivate strains of exceptional quality in our purpose-built facility and take those products to marker in our 8 retail stores, called Atlantic Cannabis.

The Role

We are currently looking for a Controller to join our team! The successful candidate will be a key member of the team and participate actively in both the financial and operational functions of the business. Reporting to the CEO, the Controller will play a critical role in daily accounting and financial management of Atlantic Cultivation and its retail subsidiary Atlantic Cannabis. The Controller will provide accurate information to the Board of Directors including analysis, budgeting, forecasting and preparing financial reports. The Controller will be responsible for directing and managing the company's accounting team, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The below list is not an exhaustive list of duties. As we are a new and growing company, the needs of the business are ever-changing and the successful candidate will be expected to adapt to changing responsibilities, within a reasonable scope of work.

  • Prepare financial statements and reports to present to the ACL board.
  • Supervise and support the accounting team which includes inventory costing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking, and cash management.
  • Attend board meetings and bring financial insights to the board for discussion.
  • Ensure financial compliance with financial covenants, regulators and CRA.
  • Identify financial risks and maintain an effective internal control system.
  • Assist the executive team in evaluating the financial and accounting impacts of new business opportunities or projects.
  • Identify and secure the resources that the accounting team needs for success.
  • Collaborate with HR on resolving HR opportunities and issues that may arise in the accounting team.
  • Generate and communicate the monthly, quarterly, annual financial statements for the needs of relevant stakeholders.
  • Lead periodic forecasting/budgeting and year end financial audit processes.
  • Investigate and make recommendations for an integrated inventory management system.
  • Understand and balance the needs of:
    • The board
    • The executive team
    • All other functions and departments
    • Business partners and suppliers
    • Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC)
    • Banking Partners
    • Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
    • Health Canada
  • Ensure exceptional communication and ethical business practices are always top of mind.

Key Qualifications & Abilities

  • Post secondary degree/diploma in accounting.
  • CPA designation, or equivalent.
  • 5+ yeas experience in a senior-level accounting role.
  • Experience in accounting systems, preferably Netsuite, cash management, budgeting, internal controls, business planning and asset management.
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
  • Self motivated and self directed
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing industry
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects and problem solve.

Job Specifics

  • Normal hours are Mon to Fri, 830-430. Occasional OT may be required to complete priority work tasks.
  • Incumbent must be able to report for work at our facility located on Captain Prim Drive in St. John's/
  • Must be able to clear a Criminal Record Check.
