Our Team:

Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.

Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist Contract Claims to join our Project Excellence team in either Toronto/Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

The primary purpose of this role is to support Contract Management areas across the Vale Base Metals CPO portfolio in evaluating contract claims, classifying causes generating claims, and establishing claims preventon strategies and processes. The scope of the role includes projects in Exploration, FEL 1, 2 & 3, and Execuition, in Canada, Brazil and Indonesia. Total mutliannual budget of around USD 28 billion.

Additional in this position, you will;

  • Issue technical opinions on claims, evaluating merit based on all relevant contractual and project management documentation, costs and budgets, measurements, daily work reports, notifications, design drawings, histograms, etc.
  • Analyze the main contract and claim data and be able to extract relevant information that can contribute to improving the maturity of the contract management areas
  • Create and monitor a claims registry along with KPIs and analytics relating to contract claims
  • Interact and coordinate meetings with multidisciplinary teams, including contract management, engineering, construction, procurement, legal, etc.
  • Support the project team and procurement by attending technical/commercial meetings with contractors to negotiate claims
  • Evaluate critical contracts prior to or during the award process to assess risks and define anti-claims strategy
  • Prepare reports on matters inherent to the topic.

About You

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Economics, Business, Finance or a related field
  • P. Eng., MBA, CPA is desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in contract management /related field.
  • Subject Matter Expert in project budgeting, cost control and planning/scheduling on large-scale engineering and construction projects in the resource sector
  • Subject Matter Expert in contract management including contract modalities, measurement criteria, risk apportionment on large-scale engineering and construction projects in the resource sector.
  • Subject Matter Expert in claims analysis methodologies and procedures.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills to navigate diverse cultures, languages, and multiple levels of management.
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Strong collaboration and relationship building skills.
  • Knowledge of contract management governance, norms, processes risk management and internal control.
  • Ability to build momentum and positive energy for change.
  • Structured and organized in handling multiple data sources: simplifying information in a consistent manner for ease of understanding by others.
  • Detail oriented and able to work independently as needed.
  • Clear, concise verbal and written communication skills in English is a must, fluency in Portuguese is a definite asset.
  • Committed to continuous learning and keeping current with evolving best practices and innovations in contract management and project management in general.
