The New Brunswick Legal Aid Services Commission (NBLASC) is seeking an accomplished, compassionate leader to join the Office of the Public Trustee in Fredericton as the Public Trustee on a 5-year term, with the possibility of extension.

The mandate of the Public Trustee is to provide personal and financial guardianship services to adults who need support due to a mental or physical incapacity; to administer the estates of deceased and missing persons; to protect the financial interests of children; and to protect the legal interests of incompetent persons.

What you will do

As the Public Trustee, you will provide management, guidance, and leadership to entire Public Trustee division, including the Legal, Guardianship, and Financial Trust teams. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

Provide leadership to legal counsel and staff on files pertaining to clients;

Ensure accountability of Public Trustee services in accordance with all statutory obligations imposed by the Public Trustee Act and all relevant legislation;

Make legal decisions on complex/sensitive issues, upon consideration of recommendations from legal staff;

Represent Public Trustee (PT) Services on the National Association of PT and Guardians (NAPTG) and participate in such sub committees of NAPTG as required from time to time;

Make PT Services presentations to the public or other community partners and continuously liaise with community partners on an ongoing basis;

Act as an advocate for the clients when dealing with other government departments or external agencies;

Provide direction, oversight and guidance regarding the accounting for and management of the Public Trustees Trust Fund: trust accounting and taxation, reporting to various regulatory authorities, and oversight of the annual audit process.

Approve annual statements and annual report for presentation to the Board of Directors with subsequent filing in accordance with legislation.

Who you are

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

Need to have (Essential qualifications and skills)

· Bachelor of Law Degree with at least eight (8) years of practicing law experience;

· Membership in good standing or eligibility for membership with the Law Society of New Brunswick;

· A minimum of five (5) years management; experience, reflecting significant responsibility for human, fiscal and technological resources;

· Experience in planning and achieving business goals and objectives;

· Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships and networks within government, and with the legal profession, external agencies and other service partners.

Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability.

An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Applicants must clearly demonstrate the essential qualifications to be given further consideration.

Nice to have (Asset qualifications)

Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate:

High level of proficiency with office technology and MS Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)

Wage

$137,800- $164,814 annually - ML-II NBLASC Management Lawyer Pay Plan
