The Opportunity
Working independently and with a team of surgeons and medical professionals the Cardiovascular Perfusion Technologist is a key member of the operating room team. The Perfusionist operates specialized heart-lung machines and other related equipment in the operating room setting and as needed in various critical care areas; has the responsibility and accountability to provide all patient life functions while on cardiopulmonary bypass; and has a direct role in the safety and well-being of the patient.
$45,000 bursary may be available if a student is willing to sign a 9-year service commitment agreement to work with NLHS Eastern Zone upon graduation.
Education for the Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology is currently offered through the Michener Institute of Education at UHN/University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, or British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Prerequisite Requirements
Applicants must apply and meet the school admission requirements for the Cardiovascular Perfusion program on their own merit. Education options, entrance requirements and fees are outlined on the Michener and BCIT websites.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance may be available to help offset costs associated with the Cardiovascular Perfusion program. Funding may be provided for tuition and books. A return-in-service agreement with NLHS Eastern Zone will be required, and the length of the return-in-service will depend on the total amount of funding provided. The service obligation will begin once the applicant has successfully completed the certification exam and started working in the role.
If the prerequisite requirements are met, applicants will be assessed for financial support based on a combination of screening criteria such as academic grades and interview(s).
