Control Systems Engineer

Reporting to the IT & Distributed Control System (DCS) Team Lead, the Control Systems Engineer is required to ensure the health and functionality of the ABB control system. The successful candidate will perform all the functions concerned with the health of the ABB 800xA hardware and software including the Refinery's basic control systems and related projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Interacting with Operations and our projects group to ensure that basic control strategies meet the requirements of Operations and our Process Engineers
  • Working closely with control room operators to both provide information and receive feedback for correction of problems or improvements
  • Supporting APC activities
  • Striving to keep the DCS system components running with 100% up time
  • Ensuring that the system software is current and that any problems are of minimal impact to the system
  • Taking the lead role in the carrying out of all system modifications and updates
  • Provide day to day support and troubleshooting of the refinery control systems
  • Oversee any third parties providing local or remote support
  • Identify scope and implement control systems improvement projects
  • Support turnaround team with subject matter expertise for the scoping of the control systems jobs
  • Support capital projects with the project scopes, cost estimates and also support design and construction

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years control systems experience as a qualified control systems engineer in renewable fuels, petroleum refining, petrochemical or similar industry (preference given to candidates with 7-10 years' experience)
  • Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation & Control system engineering, Chemical engineering, Electrical/Electronics engineering, or equivalent specific process control specialist experience in a plant environment
  • Professional Engineer designation or eligibility to register
  • Experience with ABB 800xA control system is required
  • Experience in control systems commissioning and project related (Control systems design, engineering, FAT, SAT etc.) work is preferred
  • Experience with networking, network configuration and computer security is considered an asset
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Proven communication and collaboration skills
  • Able to work with all levels of management to determine upcoming scopes of work and identify departmental requirements
  • Manage licenses and renewals of IT hardware and software
  • Able to maintain professional demeanor under pressure
  • Adaptability and flexibility
  • Well-developed organizational and time management skills
