UNB LIBRARIES

UNB Libraries has four libraries on two campuses accessible to all UNB students, including the Harriet Irving Library, the Science & Forestry Library, and the Engineering & Computer Science Library in Fredericton. Throughout the academic year, UNB Fredericton Libraries are open between 102 hours per week during the first part of the term to 120 hours per week during the last five weeks of the term. Staff in the Circulation Services offer exceptional frontline service to patrons in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

WHAT WE OFFER

Part-time | 1-Year Term | Fredericton | On-Campus

Standard Work Hours: Shift Work | Variable Hours | 15 - 23 hours per week

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Physical stamina for lifting, standing, and bending.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends; hours include working until midnight.
  • Will be required to provide service at all the three library locations on the Fredericton campus.

Salary Range: $19.20-$22.97 per hour

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Head of Reference and Circulation Services, UNB Libraries (Fredericton Campus), the Library Assistant PL3 is responsible for providing supportive student-centred front-line service primarily during evening and weekend shifts from September through April, with the possibility of limited shifts between May and August.

  • Provide exemplary customer service to an academically and culturally diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and members of the public who use the library.
  • Navigate the library catalogue and the library circulation system with accuracy and discretion.
  • Handle financial matters such as payment of fines.
  • Assist in the supervision of library student assistants.
  • Assist with opening and closing the library, as required.
  • Sort and shelve library items as required.
  • Perform general stacks maintenance duties, such as tidying and relabelling.
  • Shelf-read sections of the library stacks.
  • Search for missing items.
  • Assist with collections-based projects, as required.
  • Answer directional and basic reference questions related to library holdings and policies, referring more complex research questions appropriately.
  • Address security issues, referring more serious problems to Campus Security and appropriate library personnel.
  • Perform other duties as required.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field.
  • A relevant combination of coursework and experience may be considered.

Additional Strengths

  • Supervisory experience is an asset.
  • Expertise in searching library catalogues, databases, and other library resources.
  • Demonstrated experience providing service, preferably in an academic environment.
  • Interpersonal skills to deal with faculty, staff, student, colleagues, and other library patrons with tact, discretion, and courtesy.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with accuracy and careful attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently.
  • First aid training is an asset, but not required.
