ADVANCED CARE PARAMEDIC

Location: Goose Bay/Sheshatshiu/Northwest River

The Advanced Care Paramedic performs independent advanced medical care and intervention to patients at pre-hospital scene settings. This includes operating ambulances in responding to emergencies and routine calls; conducting physical examinations; performing comprehensive assessments and tests; interpreting a variety of tests and procedures; initiating a variety of advanced interventions; and performing other related duties as required. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed through observation, examination of records and reports, and the presence or absence of valid complaints. The Advanced Care Paramedic will report directly to the Manager of Emergency Services. The base for this service is located at Labrador Health Centre with a secondary base located in Sheshatshiu.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an approved Advanced Care Paramedic program accredited by the Canadian Medical Association;
  • Current registration with the NL Paramedicine Regulation and Office of the Provincial Medical Director as an ACP;
  • Possession of a valid Class 4 Driver's License as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador;
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification;
  • Current certification in PALS, or willingness to complete;
  • 40 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME);
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Critical and sound decision making skills;
  • Confidence to manage a variety of situations;
  • Computer skills;
  • Ability to perform various medical procedures and operate a variety of medical equipment;
  • Must be able to report to work within in a reasonable timeframe;
  • The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct.

Duties: (Included but not limited to)

  • Performs comprehensive assessments, physical examinations, advanced treatments, triage, and interventions for all pre-hospital medical and traumatic conditions for a diverse group of patients;
  • Applies advanced treatment therapies and interventions for medical disorders and traumatic injuries, in accordance with protocols;
  • Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team within healthcare facility units, such as emergency and critical care areas;
  • Completes patient treatment charting, records all pertinent patient information to include vitals, neurological signs, assessment findings and treatment provided. Ensures confidentiality of patient information;
  • Provides leadership and scene management during mass casualty incidents in the absence of an incident command supervisor;
  • Assumes patient care management during inter-facility transports for critically ill or unstable patients;
  • Preceptors and mentors Advanced and Primary Care Paramedic students during field placements to ensure students meet required competencies;
  • Participates in Continuing Medical Education (CME);
  • Maintains, cleans, and conducts duty checks of ambulances, equipment, and supplies and restocks when necessary;
  • Recognizes cultural diversity;
  • Provides on the job advice, guidance, feedback, orientation to new employees, and on the job training to staff and students;
  • Performs a team lead role at the scene of medical emergencies and is responsible to take a lead role in managing the activities of the medical management team;
  • Travel is required;
  • May be required to work alone;
  • Other related duties as required.

Salary:
CG-37 of the NAPE HS salary scale $33.38 to $37.28 per hour plus the applicable Labrador Allowance.

Hours of Work:
75 hours Bi-weekly; variable shifts.
