Course Title: EDUC 4773 FA01 - Place and Outdoor Based Teaching and Learning Methodologies

Course Description: In this course, pre-service teachers will explore the ways in which learning can move beyond traditional outdoor classrooms and how local and natural places (e.g., school grounds, community grounds, wilderness) can be critical sites for teaching and learning. Pre-service teachers will learn how to design and deliver experiential and embodies learning activities that are linked to the curriculum via learning tasks that require students to explore, wonder, investigate, and predict and observe. A key outcome of this course is to widen perceptions of "where and how" teaching can occur and includes highlighting the environmental and social benefits of incorporating local people and places into teaching practices.

Qualifications: Extensive current and relevant professional experience with contemporary approaches to teaching place and outdoor-based education in schools is required. M.Ed. or higher qualification in a relevant area is considered an asset. A record of academic expertise in relevant and contemporary theories related to strategies in teaching outdoor education in schools. Recent experience as an educator is preferred. Recent experience designing, delivering, and assessing a teacher education course at a university level is preferred. Successful recent experience working independently and as part of a team is essential. The B.Ed. is a provincially accredited program. Applicants will therefore be expected to teach and collaborate within the contexts of accreditation requirements.
