Reporting to the Director, Communications, the Senior Communications Advisor, External Relations is responsible for providing strategic communications counsel and services for the NSLC in a manner that supports and strengthens the brand; serves as the official spokesperson; manages all media relations activities; plays a critical role in reputation management; collaborates on social media channels, develops content and engages with customers. This role also provides leadership for crisis communication planning and issues management and works with team leaders to provide communication support for key projects and initiatives. The position requires business literacy, the provision of thoughtful advice and discretion due to the handling of confidential information.
Essential Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, write, execute and manage external communication plans and media relations strategies
- Serve as spokesperson and media subject matter expert, train other spokespeople as required
- Exercise strategic critical thinking and judgement to synthesize complex material into digestible lines for media
- Be comfortable delivering key messages to media in print, on camera, and by phone in both live and pre-taped interviews in a way that builds the brand and reputation.
- Manage media relations, inquiries and outreach, keep a log of all media inquiries, and organize media events
- Anticipate potential media situations and be poised to provide a timely response
- Be available after hours for media and social media monitoring and inquiries
- Foster positive working relationships inside the organization, with media and Department of Finance communications team to cultivate positive news coverage and earned media opportunities
- Manage media monitoring contracts and services, publish traditional news monitoring reports daily, monitor social media and participate in online conversations as appropriate
- Develop and provide quarterly media and social media monitoring reports, including customer contact issues, for the Board of Directors
- Produce strategic communications content including quarterly financial news releases, corporate news releases, announcements and advisories, media advisories, key messages, FAQs, Briefing Notes, website content and social media posts
- Exercise good judgement and discretion due to handling of confidential and proprietary information
- Develop, maintain, test and improve the Crisis Communication Plan and ensure integration in the Business Continuity Plan
- Research, write, edit and produce the Annual Report and other corporate publications
- Plan, write, edit and lead production of the employee engagement platform Spirited Informer and provide material and content for Swizzle
- Acts as back-up for the Director - Communications as required
Secondary Responsibilities
- Support internal communication efforts through the development and implementation of internal communication plans
- Provide communication counsel to Business Units on key projects and issues management
- Manage responses to external customer inquiries received through myNSLC.com and social media channels
- Contribute to the development and management of corporate content on myNSLC.com
- Support communications related to Corporate Social Responsibility
- Continue to monitor industry best practice and look for ways to innovate
- Support cross-functional teams in their efforts to connect with customers, develop reports and strategies
- Perform other related duties as assigned; travel may be required
As a qualified candidate, you will have:
- An undergraduate degree in business administration, communications, public relations or journalism
- At least 5 years' experience in media relations and communications and in a spokesperson role
As an ideal candidate you will have:
- At least 7 years experience in a senior communications or public affairs management position
- Experience in a crown corporation or similar public sector setting
An alternate combination of education and experience may be considered equivalent.
