Job Summary
This position, based in Halifax, NS, is responsible for providing safety leadership to management and employees through effective communication and guidance. To ensure success, the safety manager will work with operations to build a strong safety culture.
As the safety manager, the ideal candidate must be able to work with a diverse workforce including managers, supervisors, and employees to identify and mitigate workplace hazards and ensure preventative measures are in place to reduce workplace incidents. Effective and persuasive communication skills are essential for success as a safety manager.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the safety team to drive and achieve health and safety initiatives
  • Evaluate and monitor health and safety hazards and develop strategies to control risks in the workplace
  • Provide hands-on safety support and guidance to operations
  • Build, evaluate and maintain safety programs on an on-going basis
  • Facilitate investigations and provide timely reports of incidents/accidents (personal injury, property damage, near misses, etc.)
  • Conduct various safety related audits - Internal, NSCSA, etc.
  • Build and maintain strong relations with Provincial Associations and Government Agencies as related to Health & Safety
  • Conduct and monitor various industrial hygiene testing and ensure annual equipment certifications are updated and maintained
  • Provide support to affiliated companies as needed

Requirements
  • Self-Starter with the ability to work towards success with minimal supervision
  • 5 -10 years of relevant safety experience ideally within the construction industry
  • Post-secondary education in a related field
  • Professional Safety designation (CSS, CSO, NCSO, CRSP) would be considered an asset
  • Strong communication skills with ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organization
  • Effective team-leadership skills with the ability to help train and coach other safety professionals
  • Comprehensive knowledge of legislated requirements in applicable jurisdictions
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills coupled with proven ability to work well in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office programs
  • Some travel is required for this position
