The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI; http://oceanfrontierinstitute.com) is a major new global hub for ocean research headquartered at Dalhousie University with partners at major ocean research centers around the North Atlantic Ocean. OFI has established a Research Implementation Unit (RIU): a team of highly skilled and specialized technical staff who assist OFI researchers at Dalhousie with field research, data management and analysis, and interaction with key technical personnel from OFI partners.

The RIU supports ocean observation in Atlantic Canada and uses emerging technology to observe, understand and predict physical, biogeochemical and ecological change in the ocean. OFI has strong partnerships with the Marine Environmental Observation Prediction and Response (MEOPAR) Network of Centre of Excellence (http://meopar.ca) and also the Ocean Tracking Network (http://oceantrackingnetwork.org), both hosted at Dalhousie University. OFI cooperates with multiple partners in Atlantic Canada, including founding partners Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Prince Edward Island, and government partners such as the Bedford Institute of Oceanography.

Reporting to the OFI RIU Manager, with strategic and operational direction from the OFI Scientific Director, the RIU Ocean Imaging (OI) Specialist will be an integral part of field and laboratory operations. The OI Specialist will be responsible for creating a plan for the Ocean Imaging Centre, maintaining imaging systems, develop methodologies, participate in expeditions, and train students and researchers.

Undergraduate degree in Oceanography, Electronics Technology, or Engineering with 3 to 5 years' of related experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and deploying oceanographic equipment (or an equivalent combination of training and experience). An advanced degree of either a MSc or PhD, in oceanographic imaging preferred. Must be proficient in English, both written and oral. The ability to process image data is required. Must possess, or be willing to obtain, a valid driver's license. Ability to work at sea necessary, including passing physical examination required for MED A3 training. Must possess strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team and problem-solve effectively. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are required. Demonstrated ability to document activities, ensure checklists are followed, and strong attention to safety protocols with the ability to create and refine new protocols and procedures as needed.
