As a key member of the Financial Operations team, this position plays a critical role in driving the financial health of major design projects. You'll work closely with both finance professionals and design teams to ensure that billing, budgeting, and forecasting are accurately aligned with project objectives. This hybrid role combines high-level technical project accounting with team leadership, coaching, and strategic influence.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting directly to the Manager of Project Accounting, the successful candidate will lead a group of Project Accountants while also managing a portfolio of complex, multi-disciplinary projects. You'll serve as a trusted advisor and financial partner to internal stakeholders, providing insight and oversight on all things project-related—from fee tracking to contract compliance and financial performance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Project Financial Management: Oversee full-cycle accounting for complex design and engineering projects, including budgeting, billing, forecasting, and reporting.
- Cost Control & Compliance: Track project costs, manage A/R and A/P, and ensure compliance with internal policies and ASPE standards.
- Reporting & Analysis: Prepare monthly financial reports, performance forecasts, and support audits and special projects as needed.
- Process Integrity: Maintain accurate project ledgers and ensure timely month-end close procedures.
- 10+ years of experience in project accounting, ideally within a medium to large firm; partnership or professional services experience is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce.
- Experience with progress billing and working in multidisciplinary environments (AEC industry preferred).
- Familiarity with accounting systems such as BST is an asset.
- Strong proficiency in Excel; experience with Power BI, Tableau, or data visualization tools is advantageous.
- Proven leadership ability with a track record of developing high-performing teams.
