Alexandra Hospital Ingersoll (AHI) invites you to consider an outstanding opportunity to deliver high-quality care to our community. Reporting to the Director, Clinical Services we are actively recruiting a Physician Assistant (PA) to provide service in our Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit. Responsibilities will include managing lower acuity patients in the Emergency Room, completing admission orders and documentation for Emergency patients, and seeing lower acuity/chronic inpatients.

Our beautiful, family orientated community located in Southwestern Ontario is just 20 minutes east of London and 30 minutes north of Lake Erie. The Town of Ingersoll offers a mixture of leisure and recreational activities set against a backdrop of history and nature. We are a skilled group of well-trained, experienced and supportive physician staff dedicated to providing exceptional care to our patients. Our rural ED visits number approximately 15,000 per year. We provide inpatient and emergency care, available 24/7. AHI has state-of-the-art equipment including laboratory services, ultrasound and x-ray. We also have an integrated health record, Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) and computerized physician order entry.

In addition, we offer a mentorship program for our new Physician Assistants in order to assist them in developing confidence and providing support in the transition into practice.

AHI is a fully accredited 26-bed community hospital that provides both inpatient and outpatient care to a population of approximately 13,600 in Ingersoll and surrounding area. AHI provides inpatient services with 17 acute care beds, 4 Specialized Care Unit beds (Level 2 Basic ICU), and 5 Complex Continuing Care beds. An Emergency Room physician is on-site 24/7, with higher levels of care available in Woodstock (15 minutes away) and London (30 minutes away). Our partner hospital Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital (20 minutes away) provides access to CT scanning, in addition to General Surgery and Orthopedic support. The Hospitalist program is supported by family physicians.

The Ontario Physician Assistant (PA) scope of practice is defined as "under the supervision of a registered physician, the practice of medicine in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario's policy on delegation." Within this scope of practice, the PA possesses a defined body of knowledge, clinical and procedural skills and professional attitudes that are directed to effective patient-centred care within the physician-patient relationship.

Key Responsibilities

The PA will offer a range of essential services, including but not limited to:

  • Integrate all core PA competencies to provide optimal, ethical and patient- centred medical care.
  • Preform and complete the appropriate clinical assessments of a patient and formulate a clinical treatment plan.
  • Use a preventative and therapeutic interventions effectively.
  • Demonstrate proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills.

The PA will demonstrate competency in the following clinical and procedural skills:

  • Obtain health history as appropriate, including patient demographics, chief complaint, history of the present illness or injury, past medical, surgical, family, and psychosocial history, medications, allergies and systems review.
  • Conduct comprehensive and focused physical assessments and interpret findings.
  • Utilize primary and secondary assessment results to formulate a differential diagnosis and determine if further clinical investigation is required.
  • Order and complete preliminary interpretation of necessary diagnostic tests.
  • Formulate a treatment and management plan based on assessment and investigation results, availability of services and special needs of patient.

The PA will implement the following interventions:

  • Basic Life Support
  • Assistance with Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Basic airway management
  • Immobilize diagnosed or suspected fractures with splints or casts
  • Basic wound management including suturing/gluing
  • Basic investigations (laboratory and diagnostic imaging)

The PA will demonstrate an academic understanding of (and may have demonstrated skills in):

  • Airway management including initiating treatment with portable transport ventilator devices
  • Advanced trauma life support protocols
  • Minor surgery: biopsies, incision and drainage of abscesses
  • Other procedures (e.g., ear syringing, foreign body removal)
  • Pharmacological therapy (topical, oral, sublingual, inhalation, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous)

The PA will monitor patient progress and response to treatment.
