This position is responsible for the review of plans, permitting and inspections of plumbing and gas installations for buildings/developments to ensure compliance with the Safety Codes Act and Regulations, and applicable Plumbing and Gas codes. The position is required to provide technical advice on applicable codes, conduct site inspections, evaluate plans, issue permits, variances and alternative solutions and to carry out enforcement of all types of systems associated with various occupancies.

Your key responsibilities
- Reviews plans and information submitted in support of permit applications for plumbing and gas installations and determines conformance with the Safety Codes Act and Regulations, and applicable Plumbing and Gas codes to issue permits and advise applicants accordingly.
- Provide internal and external clients relevant technical information to assist applicants in determining acceptable solutions for compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Conduct site inspections of plumbing and gas installations which includes inspecting at appropriate construction stages to verify compliance or identify deficiencies, non-permitted work and/or unsafe conditions.
- Sets up and maintains accurate records of plans, permits, correspondence, inspections, compliance monitoring and reports including verification of compliance and alternative solutions / issued variances.
- Follow up identified deficiencies and unsafe conditions from site inspections by verification of compliance, re-inspection, or enforcement if necessary.
- Evaluate alternative solution and variance request applications and assess whether the alternatives achieve the equivalent level of safety as intended by the prescriptive requirements of the applicable Plumbing or Gas codes, regulations or standards of practice.
- Investigate and identify unsafe conditions and/or un-permitted work, including enforcing correction of unsafe conditions and permitting un-permitted work including issuance of Orders as necessary.
- Assist the Manager of Engineering and Safety Codes Services / Superintendent of Permits & Inspections to investigate and resolve complaints from plumbing and gas installers / contractors and the public.
- Assists Fire Services as required with the investigation of fires associated with gas and propane installations
- Participates in joint inspections to resolve issues and for occupancy permits.
What you bring
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Safety Codes Act and Regulations and Plumbing and Gas codes.
- Ability to communicate and relate to a range of internal and external customers with tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to interpret, analyze and evaluate design compliance and rationalize decision.
- Strong research, investigative and resolution skills, with the ability to enforce codes and standards.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft and other current office software.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of Grade 12 or High School Equivalency.
- Journeyperson certification as a Plumber and Gasfitter.
- Minimum 5 years related work experience.
- Plumbing (Group A) and Gas (Group A) Safety Codes Officer certification with the ability and cooperation to obtain Plumbing Group B if required.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License with an acceptable driving record
- An equivalent combination of management approved education and experience may be considered.
