Job Description

Graders at LDC are responsible for performing probing and grading responsibilities as required by the probe station, as part of the initial canola seed receiving for the entire site (as well as pea receiving in the near future). Graders must ensure that all products entering or leaving the facility is properly weighed and graded per Canadian Grain Commission (“CGC”) rules and regulation or other applicable regulations or company standards, and are required to operate all equipment associated with these activities and ensures the smooth flow of trucks in and out of the facility (probes, testing equipment, etc).

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Follows standard procedures to ensure that:
    • Seed trucks are sampled properly,
    • Samples are graded to CGC rules,
    • Seed is sent to the correct storage bin, which includes continuous communication to the truckers/farmers who are delivering seed),
    • Communicate issues/deviations to Commercial team (including rejected loads, off-grade product, early/late deliveries outside of scheduled timeslot) to be handled properly before unloading.
    • Samples are properly retained.
    • All assigned equipment and software is properly handled and operated, including grade testing equipment, HMIs for transferring seed to bins, APS, CompuWeigh system, probe controls to capture seed sample and perform grading tasks, etc.
  • Receive and complete drop-in samples from customers for analysis.
  • Cross-check test results as needed to settle farmer disputes and to ensure grading accuracy
  • Ensure that trucks flow smoothly and efficiently through the plant and that all bulk products are accurately scaled in and out of the plant, and communicate to operations and Commercial when there are delays.
  • Provide a high level of customer service, as the Grader is the primary point of contact to trucker/farmer to facilitate the delivery of seed on behalf of operations and Commercial.
  • Maintain written records and electronic data entry of grade results.
  • Ensures compliance with Company safety and food safety rules by self and others. Wears proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) as required in fulfillment of assigned responsibilities
  • Company standards are met, and plant efficiencies are optimized. Reports deviations to the department supervisor or superintendent.
  • Participate in continuous improvements, implementing efficiencies, and collaboration.
  • Ensure the Probe Station and probing areas are maintained and clean. Assign tasks and gather resources as needed.
  • Work with plant management to assist in the smooth operational running and continuous improvements of the facility.
  • All other duties as assigned and required.
Qualifications
  • Must have High school diploma or equivalent GED
  • 3+ years of previous work experience grading canola at a grain terminal preferred
  • Proven track record of successful audits preferred
  • Experience with grain and/or grain products preferred
  • Experience in an industrial environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and procedures; machinery and computer control systems along with regulatory food safety, safety and environment requirements, e.g., Federal, provincial OH&S, Environmental, CFIA / HACCP preferred
  • Preferred previous knowledge of oilseed processing operations

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to differentiate colour and smell of lower-grade seed
  • Able to maintain a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, communication and coordination with a variety of tasks occurring at the same time in a fast-paced and noisy work environment
  • Must have the endurance and stamina to maintain high level of intellectual and physical multi-tasking throughout the entire shift, in order to ensure trucks are moving quickly from the probe shack and customer service expectations are upheld
  • Able to climb stairs, up to 2 flights of stairs per hour
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours per shift with brief opportunities to sit during break periods
  • Able to lift and move products and equipment of up to 25 pounds
  • Frequent upper and lower-body movements, and repetitious reaching, bending, twisting, lifting,
  • Mechanical aptitude, effective oral and written communication skills, basic math and fundamental PC skills
  • Must be well organized, self-motivated, action oriented and able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook)

Working Conditions

  • Monday to Friday, 8-hour shifts (rotating schedule), with regular opportunities for overtime and expectations to cover unexpected absences of coworkers within small department, as well as Saturday shifts as needed during harvest season (October)
  • Call-ins or the extension of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training, cover other shifts, to respond to emergencies or perform other duties as directed by supervisor.
  • Regular exposure to (a) a variety of temperatures, (b) prevailing weather conditions, (c) gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids, (d) areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Lifting of materials and products is required. Position requires regular stair and ladder climbing and extended periods of walking and standing in order to access and work in remote areas of the plant, heights, and confined spaces. Interior office work is in a typical climate-controlled office environment.
  • Personal Protective Equipment will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations.
