Function & Overview

Under the direction of the Chief Operations Officer, the Director of Finance is responsible for the controlled management of all financial matters, including but not limited to, asset management, transactions and processes, risk management, policy, and insurance. The Director of Finance is responsible for the timely management and analysis of transactions, performing all financial duties in compliance with all applicable legal requirements, agreements, professional standards, and with the governance and operating policies of SNP. The position is responsible for the supervision and management of all Finance Department staff and is responsible for developing the overall financial strategic plan for the Institution. The Director of Finance is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinsh:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ganigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

Duties


The duties of the Director of Finance include, without limitation:
Planning and Analysis
Leading SNPs budget planning and forecasting processes;
Preparing monthly and quarterly budget and financial reports, as well as conducting analysis for SNP Leadership and the Board;
Overseeing the creation and ongoing improvement of the management of financial statements and audit documentation;
Coordinating and making recommendations for the annual general insurance policy renewal;
Contributing to project planning through the development of financial projections and estimates;
Ensuring the President/CEO and Chief Operations Officer are well informed regarding any trends or issues that are critical to the organizations financial performance;
Providing cost-value recommendations for purchases in excess of pre-established staff financial budgets, as outlined in Board policies;
Providing recommendations and implementing changes for process improvements, financial reporting systems, accounting procedures, investment activities, and financial control functions;
As part of the Capital Planning Committee, providing insights and knowledge into the ongoing capital planning efforts;
Leading strategic financial analysis and planning for the institution; this includes developing a thorough understanding of all revenue streams and associated risk profiles, as well as, in depth understanding of the financial operations of all SNP departments;

Financial Management
Completing all financial reporting, ensuring that reporting deadlines are met in accordance with all funding contribution agreements;
Developing, implementing and maintaining financial policies, systems, internal controls and procedures for the organization;
Attending organizational and Board meetings, as required, to provide updates on the financial status of the organization;
Administering employee pension and benefit plans from a financial perspective to ensure compliance with contracts, governmental requirements, and necessary payroll deductions;
Overseeing the organizations annual financial audit, including balance sheet and account reconciliation, working paper preparation, inventory, and capital asset management;
Maintaining an annual funding and reporting calendar to ensure that all reports are prepared, approved, and submitted in accordance with contribution funding agreements;
Overseeing the institutional financial planning aspects of payroll functions via thorough quality assurance, ensuring all earnings are in line with contracted amounts and required deductions are being made, reconciled and remitted;
Verifying bank deposits, signing off on bank reconciliations, and participating in account management meetings and activities;
Working with senior leadership to establish profitability standards and financial goals for all program areas of the institution;
Responsible for identifying and reporting any institutional financial discrepancies or fiscal vulnerabilities, current and future;
Providing financial management support to requests for proposals, service contracts, and tenders, as required;
Overseeing the purchasing process including developing call for proposal documents, obtaining quotes as required and negotiating with vendors;
Leadership & General Administration
Leading and developing SNPs financial strategy to support the growth of the organization, while continuing to drive operating efficiencies;
Working cooperatively with all departments and SNP Leadership to ensure timely financial reporting and operations;
Knowing, understanding, and following existing SNP policies and processes and supporting the collaborative development and effective implementation of new and emergent policies and processes;
Providing accurate, timely and comprehensive information and guidance on all pertinent matters within their jurisdiction to the COO, President and CEO, institutional governance bodies, and associated committees;
Supervising the daily operations of the Finance Department;
Participating in maintaining a supportive and healthy environment conducive to learning and working at SNP;
Conducting annual Performance Reviews for Finance Department staff; and
Other related duties, as required;

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field, MBA is considered and asset;
Accounting Designation (CPA, CMA, CGA or CA);
Minimum 5 years experience in a senior-level role in Financial Management and Accounting; and
Minimum 5 years experience managing and directing a team.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated advanced working knowledge of accounting principles and procedures (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles- GAAP) and Non-Profit accounting Standards;
Demonstrated advanced working knowledge of contractual financial agreements, as well as Grant and Fund management as it relates to Non-Profit organizations;
Demonstrated leadership and strategic thinking skills;
Demonstrated understanding of employment standards, payroll regulations & best practices, as well as pension & benefits administration;
Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on written expression (i.e., faultless spelling and grammar, and professional style);
Sound interpersonal skills including communication, organization, problem-solving, confidentiality and professional judgement;
Capacity to work both independently and in a team setting, demonstrating Hodinsh:nih values of Ga`nigohi:yo:;
High level technical skills and proficiency using standard desktop computing programs, including spreadsheets, word processing, and database applications, on the Windows 2010 (or later) operating system;
Ability to work under pressure and manage schedules, portfolios, and timelines, to meet demanding deadlines;and

Must be bondable and have background credibility allowing them to serve as a signing authority for the institution.

Criminal Record Check

The successful candidate will be required to provide an original Criminal Background Check Vulnerable Sector Screening that is satisfactory to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to the first day of work at Six Nations Polytechnic, and an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to SNP by their first day of employment at Six Nations Polytechnic.
