Reporting to the Caucus Office Supervisor, Legislative Assistants (LAs) play a critical role in supporting NDP MLAs in their Legislative duties. LAs work closely with 3 to 5 MLAs and the rest of the LA team to provide exceptional administrative support, ensuring that MLAs are able to focus on providing service to the people of British Columbia.

JOB DUTIES:
- Schedule meetings, make travel arrangements, and provide other logistical support for MLAs (Members) relating to Legislative and Caucus duties.
- Manage calendars for Members in their Legislative capacity, ensuring entries are up-to-date, complete, and accurate, and that potential conflicts are flagged as appropriate.
- Prepare for signature and maintain records of travel vouchers, expense claims, and leaves of absence for Caucus Members.
- Submit leave requests and House Duty substitution requests to Whip's Office on behalf of Members.
- Provide administrative assistance to Members as required, including but not limited to formatting and printing speaking notes, composing and editing routine correspondence, drafting congratulatory letters and certificates, clipping Hansard speeches, ordering stationery, and ensuring Members' Legislative office spaces are supported and maintained.
- Liaise with Ministry Office staff with regard to providing support to Parliamentary Secretaries in their roles.
- Schedule and attend monthly regional MLA team meetings, and take and distribute meeting notes.
- Liaise with Constituency Advisors, including attending bi-weekly regional staff team meetings, and following up on administrative action items.
- Coordinate, when asked, support for caucus committee meetings; including taking and circulating minutes and monitoring follow-up action items as required.
- Support caucus outreach activities, including assisting, when asked, with outreach administrative tasks, and storing and tracking contact information for stakeholders and individuals.
- Establish and maintain appropriate systems in order to monitor the documents and information circulating in the Legislative Assembly and Caucus Office.
- Liaise with Office Supervisor and co-workers to implement changes to administrative procedures to ensure on-going effectiveness.
- Screen telephone calls, respond to routine enquiries and receive visitors on behalf of Members.
- Additional duties as assigned.

- Superb interpersonal skills, including working with the public, elected officials, senior staff and stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, as well as the ability to follow directions with speed, thoroughness, and accuracy.
- Ability to exercise initiative, work independently and with flexibility.
- Excellent political judgment, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Strong work ethic, and ability to meet high-quality work standards.
- Willingness to receive feedback, as well as the ability to use feedback to improve and develop.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Teams, and the ability to type at least 30 words per minute..
- Knowledge of, and interest in the structure and policies of both the New Democrat Caucus and New Democrat provincial government.
- Administrative experience is an asset.
- Fluency in languages other than English is an asset.
OTHER DETAILS:
- This is a Union position governed by a collective agreement with the BCGEU (Local 701).
