Job Summary

The Intake Counsellor will be responsible for using trauma-informed best practices to provide basic settlement information and referrals to newly registered pre-arrival clients intending to immigrate to the Atlantic region. Intake counselling facilitates client registration, assesses clients settlement and employment needs through online meetings, and refers participants to employment counselling and/or self-directed and facilitated courses. In addition, the counsellor connects clients with tools and resources post-arrival, including settlement agencies and other organizations that may support clients in their settlement process. The intake counsellor also manages and enters client data into a centralized database for reporting purposes as well. In addition, the Intake Counselor is responsible to coordinate and host regular local Information & Orientation sessions with different stakeholders to support clients in their settlement journey.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducting initial interview with new clients by utilizing database and online platform tools
  • Determining client priorities for pre-arrival services, referring clients to courses and employment counselling as needed
  • Developing individualized Settlement/Action plan documents for each client and consistently keeping settlement and employment information up-to-date on post-arrival resources
  • Conducting data entry into the database with all required client information
  • Referring clients to the appropriate partner agency in their destined landing city and connecting clients with local orientation tools and links to the local community
  • Reaching out to and establishing connections at other settlement agencies, and conducting warm referral of clients
  • Ensuring clients have a clear understanding of the commitment required to participate in SOPA
  • Responding to general questions about local client destinations
  • Performing administrative duties as needed
  • Coordinating and hosting Information & Orientation webinars about settlement related topics related to the destination province and local areas
  • Participating in other SOPA activities and programming elements as needed
  • Provide information as required for internal/external reports
  • Other duties as requested by the SOPA Supervisor or Team Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in a Social Services field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of services and resources available to assist newcomers to Canada.
  • At least two years of experience in a social service setting. Familiarity with settlement processes is a strong asset.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and a high degree of cross-cultural competence.
  • Experience assessing client needs to provide appropriate service and referrals.
  • Knowledge of services and resources available to assist newcomers to Canada.
  • Experience facilitating groups and workshops.
  • Skilled at de-escalation, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to perform duties independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to function in a multidisciplinary, culturally diverse workplace.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
    Fluency inEnglish is required. Fluency in other languages is a strong asset.
