Position: Assistant Director Innu Child and Family Services

Department: Prevention Agency

Location: Sheshatshiu, NL

Job Opportunity
The Innu Round Table Secretariat is dedicated to the collective well-being of the Sheshatshiu and Mushuau Innu. Focused on the well-being of Innu children and families, the Sheshatshiu and Mushuau Innu First Nations have established Prevention Services as the agency responsible for developing and delivering child and family support services. These services aim to assist families involved or at risk of involvement in the formal child protection system. The Agency is Innu-led, utilizing a holistic approach to wellness, and working towards full Innu jurisdiction over child and family services.

The goal of the Prevention Services Agency, based on Innu knowledge and culture, is to reduce the involvement of Innu children and families in the current child protection system (CSSD) and mitigate its impacts, especially on children. The Agency also seeks to encourage and support family and community health.

About the Position

We are seeking an Innu Nation member with strong leadership, cultural grounding, and a deep understanding of Indigenous child welfare. You are passionate about Innu-led change and are ready to work collaboratively, strategically, and compassionately.

The Assistant Director will support the growth and transformation of the Agency as we move toward full jurisdiction. As the Assistant Director, you will report directly to the Director of Innu Child and Family Services and play a key role in overseeing services and programs in both Sheshatshiu and Natuashish. You will guide program development and operations, supervise front-line teams, and support strategic initiatives rooted in Innu values and holistic care.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leading and supervising program managers and service teams
  • Developing culturally grounded, preventative family support services
  • Collaborating on law development and jurisdictional planning
  • Managing budgets, reporting, and agency operations
  • Supporting the continued implementation of the Innu-CSSD Protocol
  • Engaging with Innu communities, governments, and partner organizations
  • Supporting staff growth, training, and capacity building

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in social work or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Senior leadership experience in social services or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience working in or with Innu communities
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial Indigenous child welfare systems
  • Proven management, budgeting, and administrative skills

Personal Suitability:

  • Strong professional ethics and a commitment to cross-cultural work.
  • Understanding of colonialism and the impacts of intergenerational trauma, especially on Indigenous children in child welfare systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
