We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join our Core Platform Engineering team in a hybrid role! You are experienced and passionate about building products and systems that make a meaningful impact on the lives of thousands of people and their health. What You'll Do

  • Lead architecture and modernization of our core backend services
  • Champion best practices in automated testing (unit, integration, contract) and CI/CD workflows
  • Drive improvements to our authentication platform, including OAuth flows and Auth0 integration
  • Untangle tech debt and make high-leverage decisions that unblock engineering productivity
  • Design secure, scalable systems to handle sensitive health and identity data
  • Mentor engineers across the team and elevate engineering standards
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Security, QA, and Clinical stakeholders
  • Research and advocate for technologies that level up developer experience and system robustnes

What You'll Bring

  • 10+ years experience in backend engineering, ideally working on core platform teams
  • Proven experience in Python (FastAPI, Flask) and GraphQL; familiarity with containerized dev environments
  • Expertise with modern CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, etc.) and cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
  • Familiarity with breaking apart monoliths into micro-services, including service boundary definition and communication patterns (REST, GraphQL, event-based)
  • Hands-on experience implementing and managing secure OAuth-based authentication systems (Auth0 or similar)
  • Experience designing systems that handle sensitive data (PII, healthcare/regulated environments a plus)
  • Strong knowledge of databases (Postgres, DynamoDB, or equivalent)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to thrive in ambiguity

Nice to Have's

  • Experience navigating the challenges of a startup transitioning into a scale-up, including evolving systems, processes, and team structures.
  • Experience with frontend technologies like React, TypeScript, or Node.js
  • Hands-on experience with contract testing frameworks (e.g., Pact)
  • Experience with healthcare data (DICOM, PACS, EMR systems, HealthLake, etc.)
  • Familiarity with security and privacy standards (e.g., HIPAA, ISO 27001, ISO 13485)

  • The base salary offered for this position ranges from: $157,000-$192,000 yearly in local currency depending on experience
