Overview:
The Terminal Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing daily operations and the work responsibilities of local employees. This role plays a key part in driving business growth by managing existing customer relationships, identifying new sales opportunities, and collaborating with internal teams to meet customer needs. Duties include forecasting business needs, managing budgets, supporting sales initiatives, meeting with customers, resolving issues, and overseeing employee performance and discipline. This position requires leadership, excellent communication, strong analytic skills, and effective time management.
Key Responsibilities & Accountablities:
- Oversee all operations of the terminal location, including office, yard, shop, and drivers.
- Manage terminal employees, drivers, and contractors; delegate daily tasks and monitor performance.
- Act as a point of contact for customer relationships, identify new business opportunities, and support customer retention and growth.
- Collaborate with the sales team to assist with rate quoting and contribute to account growth strategies.
- Develop plans to maximize operational efficiency and achieve business development goals.
- Communicate short-term and long-term strategies to senior management for implementation.
- Resolve complaints, billing disputes, and driver or customer conflicts related to loads, schedules, or service.
- Monitor service levels to ensure customer expectations are consistently met or exceeded.
- Conduct preliminary assessments and road tests for new driver applicants as needed.
- Track and analyze KPIs including empty miles, total miles per driver, and operating costs.
- Prepare monthly and annual reports on terminal performance for senior leadership.
- Assist with strategic planning, forecasting, and managing the terminals operating budget.
- Participate in accident claim processes and investigations.
- Implement new work methods and procedures to meet customer or regulatory requirements.
- Support HR with employee lifecycle activities including hiring, onboarding, progressive discipline, and terminations.
- Oversee scheduling and time-off requests for terminal staff.
- Conduct performance reviews with employees in partnership with HR and submit documentation to senior management.
- Promote and enforce safe work practices and ensure compliance with corporate policies and safety procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Customer Service Training and/or CLLP Designation preferred
- Business Administration Certificate or Management Training considered an asset
- Minimum of 710 years of experience in the transportation industry
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a management capacity
- Class 1A license preferred
