What is the role?

As a Civil Designer in the Highways sector at LEA, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of highway infrastructure projects. Working closely with Project Engineers, Designers, and Project Managers, you will contribute to the development of detailed designs in accordance with TAC and MTO standards. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, attend project meetings, and support the successful execution of project-specific design activities.

In addition to highway design, you will also have opportunities to participate in other civil sectors within LEAs Civil Division, including municipal infrastructure, water resources, and land development projects, broadening your experience and contributing to your professional growth across multiple areas of Civil practice.

In this role, your duties and responsibilities will include:

Participating in the detailed design of highway projects according to TAC and MTO manuals, design standards, and guidelines.

Attending project meetings with clients, public stakeholders, and team members.

Coordinating with the design team and supporting Project Engineers/Designers and Project Managers in project-specific design activities.

Assisting in developing quantity takeoffs and cost estimates.

Conducting in-field reviews and investigations of existing highway conditions and preparing field review reports.

Coordinating with utility companies/representatives/owners and assisting in organizing utility coordination meetings on-site.

Continuously enhancing professional skills and knowledge through seminars, workshops, and involvement in professional associations.

Assisting with other related assignments within the Civil division.

The qualifications you need:

Postgraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation, or a related field.

Experience through engineering internships or co-op placements on MTO highway projects is an asset.

Solid understanding of transportation engineering principles and jurisdictional design guidelines (e.g., TAC, MTO, OPSD, AODA).

Good knowledge of highway design fundamentals, including alignments, geometrics, staging, utilities, roadside safety, quantity takeoffs, pavement marking, signage, and constructability.

Hands-on experience with industry-relevant software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D, and/or InRoads/OpenRoads.

Strategic and process-driven, with the ability to thrive in fast-paced and dynamic settings.

Strong team player with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.

Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving capabilities.


The Work arrangement:

LEA operates in a hybrid environment to ensure flexibility, safety, and the well-being of everyone. Periodic attendance at our Markham/Toronto office is expected to facilitate in-person learning of new tasks with experienced senior staff.
