About Ventures & Ecosystems

This role resides within the V&E group at MaRS. V&E works with over 1400 innovation-driven science and technology startups. V&E helps entrepreneurs commercialize innovations with high business growth potential in Canada and globally by facilitating access to the customer, talent, funding, marketing and stakeholder connections required to successfully scale their business.

About the Position

The Manager, Capital Program and Engagement oversees the full-cycle of engagement between MaRS and companies admitted to the Capital Sprints Program. The role works with the Director, Venture Growth to engage venture executives, MaRS Advisors, and other MaRS resources to design and implement a high-impact program that helps seed and Series A companies to complete their raise.

The Manager, Capital Program and Engagement supports diverse strategic projects as needed and acts as an advocate for high-growth ventures and MaRS in the community.
This is a 1-year contract.

Key Responsibilities
Client Engagement and Recruitment:

  • Act as the lead day-to-day relationship manager between MaRS and ventures in the Capital Program. Drive service plans in collaboration with Advisors and other MaRS resources to help companies close seed and Series A funding rounds.
  • Assess client requirements, prioritize and enable access to select program resources to ensure our value equation remains high and the program meets individual company/executive needs
  • Design and implement processes to recruit high potential companies to MaRS

Program and Process:

  • Design and implement feedback loops to capture and understand client voice. Use these insights to drive program design and support a high-value client experience.
  • Oversee key Capital Program operations including portfolio data collection and reporting in order to satisfy funder requirements and ensure success metrics are being met
  • Share key insights related to ventures business, markets and experience with the wider MaRS team including MaRS Communications and Knowledge & Insights. The goal is to create new content which supports venture development and MaRS brand position.
  • Establish and maintain influential relationships with venture executives, MaRS staff, community and industry associations, government officials and other innovation centres. Be a leader in developing and sharing best practices within and beyond MaRS.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of how companies raise seed and series A capital, including strong familiarity with VC funds, grants, debt, and other financing options, an asset
  • Experience working with ventures or in fast-paced environments, an asset
  • Knowledge of key challenges and opportunities for high-growth, science and tech based companies, an asset
  • Strong communication skills oral, written and presentation skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills and demonstrated relationship management ability (collaborator and convenor)
  • Leadership skills and demonstrated ability to influence colleagues and stakeholders to achieve results
  • Strong ability to multi-task to meet the demands of a fast-paced, high-energy environment
  • Highly-developed organizational and process management skill
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and analytical approach with the ability to understand and synthesize complex concepts into clear and compelling presentations
