General Job Description

The Assistant Manager is responsible for overseeing all maintenance functions within the Paint Department at the Palmerston location of TG Minto Corporation. This role requires a professional approach to managing day-to-day operations, with a strong emphasis on safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. As a leader, you are expected to maintain high productivity levels while ensuring a safe working environment. Your ability to strategically plan and effectively utilize manpower and equipment directly impacts production costs and, ultimately, the competitiveness of our products in the market.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Manager to oversee all operations within the Paint Maintenance Department, including resource planning and project coordination.
  • Lead a team of maintenance technicians in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Supervise equipment installation, repairs, inspections, and daily maintenance activities; assign and organize tasks for maintenance personnel.
  • Plan, prioritize, and coordinate preventive and predictive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and meet production targets.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all mechanical and electrical inspections, work orders, maintenance records, and up-to-date technical drawings.
  • Monitor and analyze maintenance KPIs (e.g., MTTR, MTBF, OEE, downtime, PM completion) to assess and improve performance.
  • Support root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions for recurring issues and equipment failures.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members, contractors, OEMs, and external vendors; ensure contractor safety and verify work completion.
  • Coordinate with the Supervisor and Safety Specialist to ensure proper training, regulatory compliance, and safety practices are in place.
  • Foster a culture of safety and regulatory compliance in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and IATF 16949 standards.
  • Promote team engagement and development by mentoring staff and delivering targeted technical training.
  • Evaluate new equipment, establish critical spare parts lists, and monitor aging assets to plan for upgrades, retrofits, or replacements.
  • Maintain job costing records for mechanical projects, including labor and material expenses, to support cost control efforts.
  • Prepare and share weekly and monthly maintenance schedules, including completed, upcoming, and outstanding tasks, across departments.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives in collaboration with production, engineering, and quality teams.
  • Ensure adherence to 5S principles and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Report any manpower needs or disciplinary matters requiring support to the Human Resources department.
  • Responsibilities and reporting structures may be adjusted by TG Minto based on evolving business needs.

Supervisory Responsibility

As a leader, you are accountable for ensuring a safe work environment for all team members. This includes understanding and adhering to all regulations relevant to your area of responsibility, and ensuring that your team members are equally informed and compliant with the regulations applicable to their roles and work environment.

You will execute supervisory duties in alignment with company policies and all applicable laws. Key responsibilities include conducting interviews, onboarding and training staff, organizing and delegating work assignments, evaluating employee performance, recognizing achievements, and recommending or administering corrective actions as necessary. You are also expected to address concerns, resolve issues promptly, and keep the General Manager informed of all significant departmental activities.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 5 years of maintenance experience in a high-volume automotive manufacturing environment; paint shop experience is an asset.
  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience in maintenance operations.
  • Solid understanding of paint application systems and related processes (e.g., base/clear coat, sealing, curing).
  • Proficient with PLCs, HMIs, robotics (e.g., B&M, FANUC), AGVs, and industrial automation systems.
  • Skilled in using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint and other planning tools.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and lean manufacturing practices.
  • Flexible to work off-shifts, weekends, and during plant shutdowns as needed.

Preferred Assets

  • Certification in Maintenance Management (CPMM, CMRP, MMP)
  • Licensed Millwright, or Industrial Electrician
  • Familiarity with TPM, Kaizen, Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
