YMCA Glenn Carpenter Center is a non-denominational day camp, open to all.
Position Overview
As part of the Glenn Carpenter Center Staff, the Head Lifeguard and Day Camp Counsellor will be responsible for supervising the waterfront and delivering quality programming for all Glen Carpenter Center participants.
YMCA Members this year will have more access than ever to the Glenn Carpenter Center Successful candidates will work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to develop and deliver programming designed to cater to the physical, mental and social health of local children and youth. The successful applicant will engage and supervise youth participating in YMCA programming and will ensure an enjoyable safe and inclusive environment for youth and family participants of various skills and abilities.
Summer Day Camps are rich in the history of the YMCA of Greater Saint John. Located on Foster Thurston, the Glenn Carpenter Center offers day camp in a wilderness setting unlike any other location in Saint John. It offers more than 250 acres of forest, its own private lake, trails, an archery field, a sports field, a beach and much more. The camps offered are both traditional camps and specialty camps (babysitting, XC Biking, Climbing, etc.) allowing children to learn new skills and participate in some of their favorite activities during the summer.
Authority: The incumbent will take all actions appropriate to fulfilling the described functions. Such actions will be consistent with the practices and policies of the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick. Reports to the Development Supervisor.
Core Responsibilities
Dedicated to the positive development of children and youth and appreciate the mission of the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick and YMCA Camping
Assist with staff scheduling when needed, i.e. be a point of contact to find replacements for scheduled shifts and/or be a replacement if needed.
Oversee the Waterpark Resource binder, communication and training.
Assist with Lifeguard training and ongoing support.
Instruction and examination of Advanced Aquatic Courses.
Assist with new staff orientation and training.
Supervise groups of up to 15 children, ages 3-16 years and provide strong and positive leadership.
Plan, organize and deliver daily activities for camps.
Able to provide leadership specific to the various Day Camp activities to all campers.
Understands and complies with the New Brunswick Child Care facilities standards and Child Protection Practices.
Performs scheduled guarding duties at either the swimming area or canoe kayak area.
Ensure all safety and lifeguarding procedures are adhered to.
Acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
Participate in emergency procedures
Care for, store, and manage the inventory of all waterfront equipment and supplies.
Develop and implement Center-wide water emergency procedures.
Be a positive role model in all aspects of camp life, particularly with regards to health, behavior, dress, and relationships with others.
Maintain a safe and organized area both during and outside of core programming hours.
Maintain program and facility equipment, during activity set up and tear down; in a clean and orderly manner.
Communicate and enforce facility guidelines to ensure a safe and controlled environment while paying keen attention to accident/incident prevention.
Act as a coach, teammate and mentor to participating youth & Families.

Skills and Qualifications
Previous experience in a Day Camp or Youth Program setting.
Has previous lifeguarding experience.
Flexibility regarding assigned working hours.

An excellent team player able to share cooperative leadership with other staff.
Must appreciate working outdoors, all all-day
Must have NLS Waterfront or be willing and able to attain
Camp Certifications considered an asset: NLS, Waterfront, Canoe/Kayak, Pleasure Craft Operator
First Aid/CPR certification

Working Conditions
As a YMCA staff person, your hours of work and location may be adjusted due to programming needs. There is no guarantee of the number of hours worked within a work week.
The GCC Lifeguard Team will provide coverage at all times that Ashburn Lake is open. This will require you to work a rotating schedule which includes opening, closing and weekends.
As the GCC Head Lifeguard you are an hourly paid employee of the YMCA Of South Western New Brunswick
You will be required to supervise multiple activities and members around the lake.
You will be required to supervise multiple activities and members on the pool deck.
You are responsible for the members safety on a daily basis. You will be required to perform first aid and CPR when and if necessary.
This position will require the staff person to swim and stand for periods of times, sit and crouch while engaging with children on their level, and participate in the water with participants.
As a YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick staff person, you are responsible for your own travel to and from work.
The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick has a Joint Health and Safety Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss health and safety within the workplace. Questions or concerns about your workplace must be brought forward to committee members.
As Coordinator you will be required to work in an environment which is often busy and at times fast-paced.
You will be required to manage multiple activities on a regular basis.
This position will require the staff person to sit for long periods of time.
You will be responsible to follow and abide by YMCA Canada National Experience Program
