akisqnuk First Nation is seeking a passionate and experiencedHead Gardener to lead and maintain our community gardens. This position plays a vital role in fostering food sovereignty and supporting local food production.
akisqnuk First Nation (AFN) is a member Community of the Ktunaxa Nation. AFN exists for the Community. Externally, we are here to serve the Community, and internally, we are our own Community, comprised of different departments unified by our Vision, Mission, and Values. As a team, through our own roles and departments, the AFN Organization works together to achieve our strategic plan Our Thinking and continue to progress and move our community forward.
Note: This position is seasonal (April 15 to October 15), part-time working up to 20 hours each week, with a flexible schedule.
The primary responsibilities include:
Garden Maintenance: Oversee the daily upkeep of community gardens, including planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops.
Planning & Sustainability: Develop seasonal planting schedules, select plant varieties based on climate and community needs, and save heirloom seeds for long-term food sovereignty efforts.
Community Engagement: Create a welcoming space for community members, coordinate volunteer opportunities, and support Elders in using the garden for cultural teachings.
Infrastructure & Safety: Maintain tools, irrigation systems, and garden structures, ensuring a clean, safe, and organized space.
Qualifications:
2 years of experience in gardening, horticulture, or sustainable agriculture.
Knowledge of Indigenous food sovereignty and seed-saving practices is an asset.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical labor.
