Job Description

WHAT'S THE JOB?

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the upkeep, repair, and troubleshooting of all kitchen appliances and plumbing within the camp's facilities. This role requires strong electrical and plumbing knowledge, practical experience in appliance maintenance, and the ability to work independently in a remote, fast-paced environment.

The position involves a remote work lifestyle in a camp setting with the following amenities:

  • All meals and accommodations are provided
  • Travel is provided to and from the site locations from Edmonton, AB
  • Private room with cable television
  • Access to Wi-Fi
  • Access to laundry facilities and detergents
  • Access to a gym and common areas

Working Conditions:

  • Remote camp environment with extended periods away from home (3 weeks on/3 weeks off)
  • Extreme weather conditions are common in Nunavut
  • Extended periods of darkness/no sunshine during the winter months, and periods of daylight/minimal darkness during the spring/summer months

Key responsibilities include:

  • Electrical & Appliance Maintenance:
    Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on kitchen appliances (ovens, fridges, dishwashers, deep fryers, etc.) and electrical systems in the camp kitchen
  • Plumbing Repairs & Maintenance:
    Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on the camp's plumbing and lift station systems
  • Inspection & Safety Checks:
    Conduct regular inspections of all electrical appliances and systems, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and industry standards
  • Troubleshooting & Repair:
    Quickly diagnose and repair electrical, plumbing and mechanical issues in appliances and kitchen equipment, ensuring minimal downtime and uninterrupted camp operations
  • Installation of Equipment:
    Assist with the installation and commissioning of new kitchen appliances, plumbing and electrical systems as needed
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections, ensuring compliance with company policies and safety regulations
  • Emergency Response:
    Respond promptly to emergency maintenance calls related to electrical failures or appliance breakdowns, ensuring quick resolution to minimize disruption
  • Inventory Management:
    Manage inventory of spare parts and tools necessary for appliance repairs, ordering supplies as required to ensure adequate stock levels
  • Collaboration:
    Work closely with other maintenance staff and camp management to address any electrical or equipment-related concerns promptly and efficiently
Qualifications

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Journeyman Plumber Certification or equivalent in a relevant trade is an asset
  • Valid Drivers License with a clean driver's abstract is required
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing systems and camp lift stations
  • First Aid with CPR certification is an asset
  • Experience working in remote or fly-in/fly-out camps in Canada, particularly in industrial or commercial settings
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs and record-keeping systems
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, circuits, and troubleshooting techniques
  • Hands-on experience with kitchen appliances, including refrigeration units, ovens, fryers, dishwashers, and other commercial kitchen equipment
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment to identify faults in appliances and electrical systems
  • Safety-conscious and familiar with health and safety standards in remote work environments
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and manage time efficiently
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with an emphasis on minimizing downtime
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in challenging environments with varying weather and remote camp conditions
  • Excellent communication skills for reporting issues and working with the camp team

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs) and work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions and extreme weather (seasonal)
  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing manual tasks related to electrical and appliance repairs

Work schedule and remuneration:

Maintenance Technicians work on a rotational schedule of 3 weeks on/3 weeks off in Nunavut. The site location is a remote setting, requiring air travel to site. The selected candidate must have the ability to provide own transportation to Edmonton, for travel to site. You may be required to work nights, weekdays, weekends, and general holidays. Wages are paid on an hourly basis with a starting rate of $38.00 per hour. Group benefits are included upon the date of hire. Occasional travel may be required to different camp sites within the region.
