Please highlight relevant skills, experiences, and certifications in your cover letter or resume that align with a summer camp team, such as lifeguarding, canoe/kayak certifications, outdoor camping skills, leadership in clubs or committees, experience as an education assistant, and knowledge of Mi'kmaq language and culture. This opportunity is dependent on subsidy approval.

Position Summary:
Ulnooweg offers unique camps that blend STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) education with Indigenous teachings. These camps provide Indigenous youth in Atlantic Canada with immersive experiences alongside Elders, Knowledge Keepers, scientists, and industry professionals. As part of the Seasonal Programs team, successful applicants must attend three overnight camps, each lasting 10 days with delivery sites across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Ulnooweg is recruiting Camp Counsellors to support its summer camps. TheCamp Counsellor will work under the supervision of the Camp Leader to deliver Ulnoowegs Summer programming. During these multi-day events, the Camp Counsellors are responsible for chaperoning youth and ensuring activities run smoothly and on schedule. This helps create a safe and fun environment for youth to learn and play. The summer camp programs are offered at a variety of sites across Mikmaki.
Responsibilities:
- Organize and deliver activities and educational sessions for youth
- Follow and enforce safety rules during activities, including outdoor activities and excursions.
- Create relationships with camp participants, provide guidance and support as needed.
- Foster a friendly environment where youth can be themselves and explore their culture.
- Ensure a welcoming environment.
- Contribute to the smooth running of the camp, including meals, activities, and daily routines.
- Work with other counselors to make sure the camp itinerary stays on track.
- Support capturing the impact of our camps through documentation
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with children in a camp or educational setting.
- Experience working directly with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and youth is an asset.
- Ongoing or completed post-secondary education is an asset.
- Current certification in Emergency First Aid and CPR an asset.
- Class 5 vehicle license is an asset.
Working Conditions
- 24/7 availability and irregular work hours during overnight camps; regular work hours outside of camp periods
- Physical ability to lift up to 75lb.
- Overtime as required.
- Hazards associated with working in a seasonal program setting.
- Long hours, shift work.
- Prolonged standing, walking, lifting, squatting, and bending.
- May perform work in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and inclement weather.
