Position Summary:

Ulnooweg offers unique camps that blend STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) education with Indigenous teachings. These camps provide Indigenous youth in Atlantic Canada with immersive experiences alongside Elders, Knowledge Keepers, scientists, and industry professionals. As part of the Seasonal Programs team, successful applicants must attend three overnight camps, each lasting 10 days with delivery sites across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, Seasonal Programs the Camp Leader will support with planning and delivery of Ulnoowegs multi-day, overnight Seasonal Programs. During these program deliveries, the Camp Leader provides support for youth and Camp Counsellors and is the primary support when the Program Coordinator is not available or is off duty. They are responsible for preparing activities and resolving unexpected problems encountered during the Seasonal programming. The Camp Leader ensures the fun, safe, and effective delivery of Ulnoowegs seasonal programming.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to camp participants and Camp Counsellors.
  • Craft engaging and relevant activity plans.
  • Guide and mentor Camp Counsellors.
  • Facilitate training Camp Counsellors on policies, procedures, and activities relating to each Seasonal program.
  • Assist with the development and facilitation of camp activities as required.
  • Enforce policy and procedures for all participants in Seasonal Programs.
  • Resolve conflicts during the delivery of Seasonal Programs.
  • Regularly assess the safety of the activity environment, eliminating concerns or hazards as they arise.
  • Ensure cultural sensitivity in maintaining program schedules and timelines.
  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator, Seasonal Programs to manage event bookings and logistics.
  • Regularly interact with camp participants to build interpersonal connections and collect program feedback.
  • Support the organization and coordination of travel logistics for staff, participants guests and partners.
  • Support camp participants in developing new skills.
  • Ensure that records of any accidents or injuries that take place on-site are filed and accurate.
  • Ensure a welcoming and respectful environment is maintained for camp participants, and camp guests such as Elders and Knowledge Keepers while on external site visits with associates.
  • Support capturing the impact of our camp programs through documentation.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with youth in a camp or educational setting.
  • Experience working directly with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and youth is an asset.
  • Ongoing or completed post-secondary education is an asset.
  • Current certification in Emergency First Aid and CPR.
  • National Lifeguard Certification is an asset.
  • Class 5 vehicle license is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • 24/7 availability and irregular work hours during overnight camps; regular work hours outside of camp periods
  • Physical ability to lift up to 75lb.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Hazards associated with working in a seasonal program setting.
  • Long hours, shift work.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, lifting, squatting, and bending.
  • May perform work in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and inclement weather.
