About Marketing & Communications
The Marketing & Communications (MarCom) team at MaRS drives brand awareness, supports internal business unit marketing, and helps startups gain national and international exposure.
We manage the MaRS brand, ensuring it attracts top ventures, corporate partners, and investors through strategic campaigns and high-impact events. Our team also provides marketing expertise to business units, crafting content, newsletters, and event promotions that amplify our programs.
About the Position
This role is for a strong writer and editor who excels at developing cogent and compelling content, such as reported features, opinion pieces, reports and alternative story formats for multi-platforms. This role will help develop and deliver the best possible content that positively supports MaRS, MaRS ventures and the innovation ecosystem as a whole.
This is a 1-year contract.
Key Responsibilities
- Content Development (60%)
Using standard journalistic practices, report and write content that explores themes in tech innovation across multiple platforms, including our media partner sites, our website and social channels. This could include Q&As, articles, op-eds, reports and new content initiatives. This involves developing the concept, reporting and working through edits. - Cross-department collaboration (10%)
Collaborate with venture services and other units within MaRS to identify their content needs, helping ensure their requests support the MaRS key strategic priorities. - Identify opportunities (10%)
Identify and ideate thought leadership opportunities and industry trends to help guide content creation. - Quality control (20%)
Edit content using editorial best practices to ensure all content is on-brand, consistent in terms of style, quality and tone of voice. This involves working with writers through various drafts, as well as fact-checking stories.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree
- Educational focus on journalism, public relations or communications, an asset
- 10 years+ in editorial work
- Proven ability to distill technical or industry-specific information and data into compelling stories
- Highly developed writing, editing and communications skills
- Ability to follow, analyze and connect innovation coverage and trends
- Highly developed skill in structural editing, as well as line editing and copyediting

Salary Range: $75,000 - $95,000, extended healthcare benefits, lifestyle spending account, and paid time-off.
