MacKay Contracting is a progressive and well-established Heavy Civil Construction and Mining Services Company. We operate throughout the East Kootenays/Western Canada on a wide variety of projects. This position will be responsible for conducting field and lab tests on construction materials such as soil, concrete and aggregates. This role ensures that materials meet project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, hands-on, and comfortable working in both field and lab environments.

Location & Hours:

This role will be based out of the Cranbrook office located at 1600A Theatre Rd., Cranbrook B.C., however the vast majority of time will be spent on the project sites that MacKay is currently operating. This position will involve going out to the jobsites, and when not in the field, is to be maintained from the office. Hours will vary on a project-to-project basis and weekend and/or overtime hours will be required on an as-needed basis to ensure projects are on schedule. While working at the home office, regularly scheduled hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Testing of soils/aggregates, asphalt, and concrete
  • Support both administrative and construction activities as assigned by Superintendent/Foreman/Project Manager
    • Assist with specifications and drawings, perform material takeoffs, prepare estimates
    • Assist with site surveying and quantities
  • Prepare work plans and quality control plans
  • Manage and track costs and materials
  • Schedule equipment
  • Administer safety programs and assist in maintaining public and client relations
  • Provide accurate, timely sampling, testing and inspection for quality control/quality assurance purposes
  • Work in the field and in our materials testing lab, preparing and maintaining test reports and records
  • Liaise with clients; navigate non-compliance issues and provide technical support when needed
  • Perform other labour duties as required
  • Daily and timely submission of safety documents to SiteDocs
  • Daily submission of daily timecards

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Knowledge of various related CSA and ASTM testing methods
  • General understanding of concrete and asphalt mix designs and applicable exposure classifications
  • Use, care and handling of nuclear density gauges
  • Knowledge of soil compaction principles and testing
  • Familiarity with aggregate classification and testing procedures
  • Awareness and/or interest in environmental monitoring procedures
  • Proficient at report writing, review and interpretation of results
  • Proficiency in computers and Microsoft systems including MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, and common smartphone applications
  • Hold a valid drivers licence with a clean drivers abstract and practice safe driving habits always
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work remotely as needed
  • In good physical condition and able to lift minimum 50lbs.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and/or night shifts and/or weekend shifts, as needed
  • Position requires a high level of initiative and a positive attitude
  • Organizational and time-management skills
  • Must be able to give and follow both oral and written instructions
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather
