We are looking to add aLead Hand to our Utilities team in Southern Alberta!

Position Title: Lead Hand

Reports to: Business Unit Manager & Project Coordinator

Department/Location: Utilities / Calgary

Position Summary

The Lead Hand this position is responsible for delegating and coordinating the workload amongst the staff and creating a safe and compliant work environment. With a focus on quality control, the Lead Hand ensures that the documentation such as equipment and facility inspections are completed and ensures safe work is performed by contractors on site. This position mentors select junior operators for advancement to this role. With the Utilities headquarters being in Red Deer, the Lead hand in Calgary will be responsible for the overall operation of the crew for all work in Calgary and area. Opportunity for advancement is significant.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate work activities for team members, ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
  • Coordinate daily processing tasks ensuring rotation and cross training are completed
  • Prepare and complete weekly and monthly site inspections
  • Actively participate in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and tailgate discussions.
  • Work to manage inventory of consumables and reorder as required
  • Promote near miss reporting and hazard IDs.
  • Act as a mentor and provide on-the-job training to employees to support skill development
  • Makes sure all staff are compliant with safety tickets and time sheets
  • Schedules additional resources on as required basis as in sickness and vacation in conjunction with Supervisor.
  • Conducts and documents staff and contractor site orientations.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Supervisor and Senior Project Manager to improve internal processes and identify areas for efficiency gains.
  • Address operational challenges promptly and escalate issues to the Site Supervisor when necessary
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with safety protocols, company policies, and environmental regulations.
  • Support special projects as assigned by the Operations Supervisor and Senior Project Manager , including process improvement initiatives.

Physical Requirements

Physically demanding, involving standing, lifting, and operating equipment. You are responsible to work in a safe and proper manner utilizing Workplace Ergonomics to avoid injury to oneself and to others.

Working Environment

There is a possibility of cuts, bruises, straining, disease and /or severe injury if safe work practices are not followed.

Work is primarily carried out as a Field-based role, requiring outdoor work in various weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Experience in shallow utility installation, specifically telecom
  • High school or GED diploma;
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Position requires a high level of initiative and a positive attitude;
  • Must be able to follow both oral and written instructions;
  • Strong understanding of bookkeeping principles;
  • Excellent communication and staff rapport;
  • Valid class 5 drivers license
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • TDG training KBL will provide training;
  • WHIMIS certification KBL will provide training
