  • Hours: 35 hours per week
  • Shifts: Monday to Sunday 9am-6pm
  • Hourly Wage:$27.15 per hour

Summary

Within the context of a client/resident and family centred care model and in accordance with established vision and values of VCH, Tlaamin Nation and Lift Community Services, the Activity Worker works under general supervision and in cooperation with multi-disciplinary team members to carry out established activity programs.

Responsibilities include organizing activities, accompanying clients/residents on outings and coordinating portering, demonstrating and teaching activity techniques, and assisting clients/residents with practicing daily living skills. Reports relevant observations of client/resident progress and behaviours to Therapist and/or other healthcare staff, provides direction to volunteers, organizes equipment and supplies for activities, ensures a safe work environment and maintains established inventory of supplies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carries out individual or group leisure activities based on client/resident care plan
  • Demonstrates and teaches the techniques of a variety of social, educational, creativity and behavioural skills
  • Accompanies clients/residents on outings and co-ordinates portering during activities
  • Assists clients/residents with practicing daily living skills
  • Encourages clients/residents and families to participate in relevant decision-making
  • Encourages clients/residents to take responsibility in their day to day living by asking them to independently carry out basic tasks within their current functioning level
  • Reports relevant observations of client/resident's progress and behaviour by methods such as communicating concerns and/or changes of client's condition to the Therapist and other health care staff.
  • Reviews goals of clients/residents on a regular basis and provides suggestions for change or modifications to existing programs as appropriate.
  • Maintains a clean, safe work environment by practicing good housekeeping habits
  • Maintains equipment and tools by methods such as setting up and organizing items for activity projects, overseeing client/resident usage, returning items to designated areas, counting returned items and identifying missing items to ensure proper and safe usage of equipment; reports malfunctioning equipment, potential hazards, and supply needs to supervisor.
  • Maintains established inventory of materials by methods such as preparing purchase requisitions for signature and/or purchasing items through petty cash as directed by the Supervisor. Receives and distributes goods delivered.
  • Arranges for entertainment and other community resource involvement for the residents as required.
  • Provides work direction to volunteers during activity programs and demonstrates related techniques as required.
  • Participates in orientation of new client/residents, staff and volunteers as needed.
  • Completes required reports by methods such as recording workload statistics in accordance with established procedures for departmental reporting purposes.
  • Participates in departmental and other meetings as requested.
  • Prepares, assembles and distributes written communication materials such as newsletters, bulletin board announcements and activity schedules, and performs related clerical tasks.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 12, completion of recognized recreational courses plus two (2) years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
