Tool and Die Maker

Location: Woodbridge, ON

Job Type: Contract to Hire

Position Summary:

The Tool and Die Maker will analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges. This role also involves modifying dies to meet engineering changes and providing guidance to apprentices.

Qualifications Required:

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Certificate of qualification as a Tool and Die Maker.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to identify root causes and recommend countermeasures.
  • Knowledge of progressive die design and function.
  • Self-starter capable of working independently on various die types (Progressive, Auto Transfer, Hand Transfer, Cut-off, Benders).
  • Ability to machine components to tight tolerances and high surface finishes.
  • Proficient in reading blueprints, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including geometry, trigonometry, and practical applications of fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Valid Crane Operator license.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS/GHS.

Preferred:

  • Five years of experience in an automotive production environment.
  • Mould Maker Certificate of qualification.
  • Valid forklift license.
  • Knowledge of CNC equipment and programming.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Experience with sink/wire EDM programming and operation.
  • Familiarity with CAD modeling software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks, ESPRIT, Inventor).
  • TIG welding experience.
  • Automotive manufacturing experience.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Provide shift support to complete open action items.
  • Oversee production coverage, changeovers, manufacturing spares, preventative maintenance, and predictive maintenance.
  • Conduct pre-start inspections for cranes and toolroom equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized toolroom in alignment with 5S standards.
  • Ensure effective communication of production-related issues across shifts.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot tools and progressive dies.
  • Operate toolroom equipment safely and effectively.
  • Modify, repair, and troubleshoot progressive dies, adhering to close tolerances based on blueprints and sketches.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance documentation for progressive dies.
  • Contribute to meeting production schedules and achieving business objectives.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and address dimensional quality concerns.
  • Maintain compliance with IATF 16949 and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Perform all tasks in a safe and environmentally conscious manner.

Working Conditions:

  • Production floor environment (not climate-controlled), with exposure to dust and dirt.
  • Fast-paced environment with multiple demands and deadlines.
  • Physical endurance required for some tasks.
  • Independent work and collaboration with cross-functional teams as needed.
