Role Summary
As a Foreman, you drive the success of underground water and sewer projects by leading and motivating your team to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality work, contributing to the future of GS Construction.
In this role you will be responsible for the following:
- Project Coordination & Leadership Work closely with the Superintendent and Project Manager to coordinate project activities, resolve on-site challenges, and drive production to meet project deadlines and quality standards.
- Technical Knowledge & Specifications Read and interpret engineering drawings, locate sheets, and contract specifications. Ensure that all work follows the project requirements and engineering standards while troubleshooting technical issues as they arise.
- Safety & Compliance Take a leadership role in job site safety by conducting hazard assessments, daily tailgate meetings, and site inspections. Ensure compliance with OH&S regulations, enforce safety protocols, and document all safety-related activities.
- Crew Supervision & Training Lead, mentor, and train crew members, ensuring efficient, safe, and high-quality work. Promote a culture of accountability and teamwork while reinforcing The GS Way processes and procedures.
- Trenching & Utility Installation Oversight Supervise key installation tasks, including benching pour-in-place and pre-benched manholes, laying pipe to grade, and coordinating the installation of valves, hydrants, couplings, and fittings.
- Site & Material Management Ensure proper trenching, backfilling, and material handling to maximize efficiency and minimize waste. Verify that backfill is being managed correctly and that dirt movement is efficient to avoid unnecessary rework.
- Decision-Making & Problem-Solving Make medium-to-high-level decisions on-site, resolving production, safety, and personnel challenges with minimal supervision.
- Field Documentation & Reporting Utilize SiteDocs, B2W, and other field tracking software to document daily crew and equipment hours, production progress, and safety reports. Complete budgeted labor hour reports, SIP reports, and production logs to maintain accurate project records.
- Client & Stakeholder Communication Collaborate with Superintendents, owners, clients, and engineers to interpret contract specifications, resolve site concerns, and ensure project goals are met.
- Accountability & Team Dynamics Foster a positive work environment, ensuring that crew members are held accountable for their tasks. Promote a respectful but firm leadership style, keeping morale high and venting concerns up, not down.
Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of experience in water and sewer construction, including at least one year as a foreman or lead hand.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, equipment, and materials used in water and sewer projects.
- Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings and specifications.
- Proficient in Microsoft Windows (Word, Excel, and Outlook); general computer literacy is required.
- Current, valid drivers license with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of construction safety regulations; certifications like First Aid/CPR, CSTS, and OSSA is an asset.
