Job Description

Boom Truck Operator are responsible for the operation of Cando's boom trucks. Working for the Infrastructure Renewal Department, the Boom Truck Operator ensures safety is a high priority at all times and procedures are respected and followed as per CROR and COR regulations.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains railway picker truck on track including cutting rail and loading product into rail gondola cars; when licensed, operates unit on main line track and on road
  • Builds relationships with the customer; interfaces with the customer via phone, radio, or in person
  • Maintains production quotas set by the customer
  • Loads the equipment and secures for transport
  • Purchases supplies necessary to maintain the equipment and the safety environment
  • Maintains necessary journals or maintenance documents as required by the Department; completes daily paperwork such as car loading, billing information, PO's, and transmission of all daily activities as pertinent to track daily costing
  • Transports the team to and from various locations
  • Trains and mentors other employees on the operation and maintenance requirements of the picker truck
  • Guides employees in the safe operations of equipment and the rules and regulations required to perform the operations of the Department

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Holds and obtains a valid driver's license (car air brake endorsement an asset); holds or working toward a Class 1 driver's license; clean Driver's Abstract (last three years)
  • Ability to pass and maintain clear drug & alcohol
  • Demonstrated team building skills including interpersonal, communication, and problem solving as well as show strong leadership skills
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to be safe on track and to comprehend oral direction
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly
  • Ability to understand, record, and apply oral and written instructions; document work activities, and prepare required reports or work orders
  • Mechanical ability is preferred, with the capability of performing troubleshooting and maintenance in the field
  • A base knowledge of costing and computers is an asset
  • Willingness to adapt to new technological changes and improvements and participate in training and self-development programs
  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time (typically 10 days on, 4 days off) away from the home base of Brandon; work in remote locations in all weather conditions

Education & Experience

  • Minimum one year operating a Boom Truck required
  • Possess or able to secure Canadian Rail Operating Rules, eRailsafe, and First Aid/CPR certifications
