Indigenous Program Facilitator & Housing Support Worker (6-Month Contract)

About Us: Closer to Home Community Services (CTH) is a non-profit organization located in Southern Alberta since 1995. CTH provides a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of children, youth and families.

About the Position: In this full-time 15-month contract, the Indigenous Facilitator & Housing Support Worker will provide culturally appropriate facilitation and support services to Indigenous individuals and families who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. This role focuses on delivering holistic support, including housing assistance, cultural connection, and advocacy to promote stability and well-being.

  • Provide ongoing support to clients to maintain housing stability, including budgeting assistance, tenancy rights education, and conflict resolution.
  • Advocate for clients with landlords, housing providers, and other relevant agencies.
  • Manage crises in a culturally responsive way.
  • Utilize the Teaching Family Model as a holistic approach to develop safe, stable relationships and teach skills that increase self-efficacy.
  • Develop and facilitate culturally relevant workshops, activities, and programs that promote Indigenous culture, traditions, and values.
  • Foster connections between clients and local Indigenous communities, Elders, and cultural resources.
  • Incorporate traditional knowledge and practices into support services to enhance clients' cultural identity and resilience.
  • Work collaboratively with other service providers, community organizations, and government agencies to coordinate services and resources for clients.
  • Develop individualized case plans in collaboration with clients, outlining short-term and long-term objectives.

About You: You are eager to learn and carry out the principles and philosophy of Closer to Home and the Teaching Family Model. You have a deep understanding of and involvement with Indigenous ways of knowing, being, connecting and doing, and are willing and able to learn and incorporate authentic and original teachings and practices of families in the program, with an understanding and respect for the various Nations and membership of which they belong. You have knowledge of the ancestral land of the Blackfoot people and the Treaty 7 Nations. You possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to effectively communicate with and relate to people of all ages. You are detail oriented and organized and can manage multiple priorities at one time. You are a compassionate individual with a positive, empathetic and relational approach. You have experience providing trauma-informed, family-sensitive and culturally responsive care.

Qualifications:

  • A diploma or degree in a related field is preferred and previous experience working with vulnerable children and families is an asset, however a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Familiarity with Indigenous Ways of Knowing
  • Experience working in Community Group Care or other in-care programs (preferred)
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues affecting Indigenous people.
  • Willing to work an unstructured work week, including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • This position requires the use of a personal vehicle for work-related purposes. Candidates must show proof of a class 5 Alberta driver's license, a personal vehicle, and a clean 3-year drivers abstract with no. Candidates must also agree to maintain $2 million liability insurance on their personal vehicle, and consent to the possibility of an annual driver's abstract review to meet our insurance providers requirements. Mileage will be reimbursed in alignment with the CRA guidelines and CTH policy.
  • A Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and an Intervention Record Check must be completed prior to commencement. Any convictions or records should be disclosed before hire.
  • Ability to manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and, if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm.
