Role Summary
As a Pipelayer, you play a vital role in underground utility installations, working closely with the Foreman, Topman, and Equipment Operators to ensure precise pipe placement, proper bedding, and alignment.
In this role you will be responsible for the following:
- Trench Safety Install trench boxes and shoring systems, ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Recognize, report, and mitigate potential hazards.
- Excavation Support & Utility Work Assist with trench preparation by guiding excavation depth, ensuring proper pipe bedding, and hand-digging around existing utilities to prevent damage. Communicate with equipment operators to ensure trenches are dug to the correct specifications.
- Grading & Leveling Read levels, set up laser levels, and determine correct grading for pipe installation.
- Bedding & Backfilling Perform proper bedding techniques (not bell-to-bell) and backfill trenches to meet project specifications. Assess when to use rock vs. sand for bedding.
- Pipe Installation Lay and align water and sewer pipes according to blueprints and specifications. Cut, bevel, and connect pipes using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Pipe Connections Set up and operate a spud line for precise pipe connections. Install stop and seals, manhole (MH) connections, Inserta Tees, and properly brace hydrants.
- Water Main Installation Install new water mains and reconnect existing services. Perform water tapping using tapping machines.
- Testing & Quality Control Conduct pressure tests, leak tests, and inspections. Verify that all joints, fittings, and connections meet project and regulatory standards.
- Air Monitoring & Confined Space Entry Utilize air monitors, conduct bump tests, and follow confined space entry protocols.
- Safety & Compliance Follow Alberta OH&S regulations and company safety protocols. Use proper PPE and lifting techniques. Ensure trench safety is maintained at all times.
- Site Communication Work closely with foremen, operators, and crew members to complete projects on schedule. Communicate any issues or required adjustments.

Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a water and sewer construction setting.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, locate sheets, and construction drawings.
- Strong knowledge of grading, trench safety, bedding techniques, and pipe installation methods.
- Proficiency in using laser levels, air monitors, and tapping machines.
- Experience working in confined spaces and underground environments.
- Familiarity with trench safety procedures, shoring, and air monitoring.
- Knowledge of utility damage prevention and material handling best practices.
- Knowledge of construction safety regulations; certifications like First Aid/CPR, CSTS, and OSSA is an asset.
