Shelter Support Worker

Permanent, Part Time

Details of the Position

Provides referrals, support, guidance, and problem solving to residents and crisis line callers. Assists and supports clients to identify and understand the issues of abuse in their intimate partner relationship. This position is responsible for the implementation and ongoing service delivery of residential programs.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in social work or a related field in human services and minimum of one-year recent related work in similar environment required or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required. Direct program delivery experience in the community social services sector with a demonstrated working knowledge of community-based programs.

Sunday: 3:00PM - 11:00PM

Tuesday: 7:00PM - 11:00PM

Thursday: 7:00PM - 11:00PM

Starting Pay Rate

$29.17 per hour

This position supports an essential service working with direct client contact, requires: union membership, satisfactory completion of a criminal records search, and Standard First Aid Certificate.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Screens prospective residents for suitability prior to admission. Assesses needs and risks and orients new residents to services and supports available during their stay.

2. Provides emotional support and assesses clients immediate needs. Assists clients to define and implement an action plan. Provides information to clients on resources available and recommend appropriate services.

3. Plans, prepares and conducts short-term group or individual counselling sessions using techniques such as active listening, conflict resolution, and basic group counselling techniques. Evaluates effectiveness and client progress. Provides crisis intervention/management as required.

4. Participates in the development, modification and evaluation of client service plans with the case management team. Participates in case management meetings on a regular basis to report clients activities and progress.

5. Facilitates support group in shelter and in community and provides life-skills training in social and interpersonal skills.

6. Liaises with and/or advocates for the interest of the client with other community service providers such in areas related to legal or social assistance, medical care, housing, counselling, childrens or emergency services.

7. Maintains current knowledge of issues and resources related to intimate partner abuse and violence. Provides liaison and advocacy to clients of other professionals, agencies and/or the community by providing education or serving on relevant community committees

8. Maintains accurate client records, staff logs, statistics and other related records and provides correspondence and reports as required.

9. Works as part of a team and contributes to the overall management of the household. Documents and reports all safety, maintenance, supply and equipment issues.

10. Participates in back up schedule rotation as scheduled.

11. Orients and assigns duties to volunteers/practicum students

12. Performs other related duties as required.

Job Skills and Abilities:

Well-developed interpersonal, counselling, oral and written communication skills

Good organization, time and general management skills

Knowledge of group process and facilitation techniques

Ability to work effectively with other program staff, therapists, social workers, and other related personnel.

Additional Information:

This position is required to work in an environment with clients experiencing crisis or interpersonal situations. Support is often related to long-term impacts of physical, financial, verbal, sexual and emotional abuse from intimate partner violence.
