Position Summary

We are developing advanced nanotechnology to extend our manufacturing capabilities. This technology has broad applicability to secure documents of all types, to quantum computing, to medical uses, and to environmental remediation. As an Associate Scientist, you will be part of the dynamic and highly skilled team developing this technology. You will work in a one-of-a-kind cutting-edge laboratory, where you will use unique surface science instrumentation, to conduct research and develop novel approaches to bottom-up manufacturing. Job Description

What You Will Do

You will be integrated into one of our teams where the team manager will provide you with the appropriate training after which you will participate in the team's work and:

  • Operate a variety of Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPM) (qPlus AFM and STM are the main work tools we use daily) and, possibly, other surface science equipment such as Field Ion Microscopes, XPS, vacuum chambers and suitcases, ultra-high vacuum pumps and bakeout equipment, mass-spec and MBE apparatus.
  • Participate in troubleshooting, experimental design, scientific literature reviews, problem solving, and propose solutions to research problems with the high-level company goals in mind.
  • Analyze data. The analysis may include use of specialized SPM analysis software, development and use of Python scripts, statistical analysis of large sets of data, and the use of various graphing software. The analysis should ultimately result in a clear and concise presentation of data appropriately supporting a set of conclusions.
  • Write technical reports. The writing should be clear, concise, and adapted to the specific targeted audience.
  • Perform cryogen fills when needed (most of our SPMs are cooled down using liquid nitrogen or liquid helium) and follow internal SOPs.
  • Participate in scheduling of teamwork. Participate in scheduling of cryogen fills.
Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Science or Engineering
  • Experience in any of the following areas is an asset:
  • Experimental Techniques:
    • Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Scanning Electron Microscopy
    • Exposure and experience with Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) equipment. Experience with different pumps and processes used in UHV applications.
    • Atomic-scale research with Si(100) wafers, microfabrication processes, chip fabrication processes.
    • Molecular deposition and manipulation.
  • Manufacturing and Automation:
    • Automated manufacturing systems,
    • micro-robotics,
    • micro-manipulation, and/or
    • micro-assembly,
    • MEMS and/or NEMS
  • Software and Programming:
    • Programming tools such as Python and LabView
