Job Title: Health and Safety Superintendent

Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, the Superintendent, Health & Safety is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Skeena's safety program. This role collaborates with site personnel, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure safe operations and drive ongoing improvements in health and safety.

As a key leader in Skeena's operational safety program, the Superintendent, Health & Safety plays a critical role in ensuring safety compliance at field sites and development projects. This position is responsible for managing and enhancing the safety program at the Eskay Creek mine site.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Team Leadership & Supervision
  • Directly supervise Health & Safety Advisors, Medical Team, and Mountain Safety Team
  • Provide leadership and training for the on-site Emergency Response Team
  • Emergency & Crisis Management
  • Deliver Crisis Management Training for all members of the site Emergency Operations Center and Corporate Team (Incident Command System)
  • Act as Incident Commander for emergency response when required
  • Incident Management & Compliance
  • Conduct and support incident investigations, identifying corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Oversee QA/QC for all incidents entered into the site incident management system, ensuring proper workflow assignment
  • Provide incident investigation training for all new and existing supervisors and management
  • Regulatory Compliance & Inspections
  • Conduct and respond to Ministry of Energy, Mines & Low Carbon Innovation (EMLI) inspections and requests
  • Coordinate and oversee regulatory-required training, including Fall Protection, Confined Space, and Mobile Elevated Work Platform
  • Field Engagement & Safety Culture
  • Conduct and coordinate Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) field visits to reinforce safety culture
  • Manage the Learning Management System (LMS) to track and improve training initiatives
  • Injury Management & Return to Work
  • Manage the return-to-work and injury management program, ensuring compliance with WorkSafeBC injury reporting requirements
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Promote and sustain a strong safety culture across all levels of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably assigned.

The Ideal Candidate

Education / Qualifications:

Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

Experience / Skills

  • Minimum of five plus (5+) years of directly related Health and Safety Management experience or equivalent combination of experience is required, preferably within the mining or resources sector.
  • Experience in major projects and mining construction is preferred
  • Working knowledge of BC HSRC, WCB and WorksafeBC guidance and rules
  • Previous experience working with the Tahltan, Nisga'a, Skii km Lax Ha, and/or Gitanyow Nations is highly desired.
  • Experience with LMS and INX InControl is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills using MS office suite is required.
  • Knowledge of mining methods, safety regulations and safety engineering
  • Detail oriented with excessive attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Exhibits a high degree of responsibility for confidential matters
  • Effective team player who can jump in wherever is needed
  • Strong interpersonal and reasoning skills, with proven problem-solving abilities
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as with others

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena's Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.

CompensationThe expected hourly range for this position is CA$67/h - CA$84/h, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
